Running 1.5.14 on a hosted Linux server. Everything's been running just great for a couple of months, suddenly the admin login to the backend doesn't work. I've scoured the forums for answers and see that this appears to be a common problem, but I don't see a consensus on what could cause the problem.

What I've already tried:
1. resetting the admin password in phpMyAdmin with MD5 hash. No luck. I'm not even getting a 'bad password' error, just jumps back to the admin login screen.
2. Checked the 'jos_plugins' table to ensure it's published. It is.

Any directions for troubleshooting this is greatly appreciated.

Sherm

Try to rename the php.ini in root, to php.ini.old.

Hope this helps!

I'm in a shared hosting environment. Not sure I can get at the php.ini file.

Could there be a setting in that file that was changed that could have caused the problem?

Seriously, this is a widespread issue with dozens (if not hundreds) of users experiencing this problem. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on how to solve it. I'm baffled the developers haven't taken it upon themselves to solve this issue, and if they have, why aren't they sharing the solution? It seems to have a number of causes. I gotta believe there has to be a single root cause, and once that issue is resolved it'll go away.

Hello? Anyone listening?

I have to agree. This is extremely frustrating.
I was just about ready to show off the new site to the end users and suddenly nobody can login.
Regardless of front end or back end.

If there are many different solutions, can we at least get
them consolidated into one troubleshooting guide?

My 'new' site has been down for three days.

Have you talked with the web host?

Hello, No I haven't seen the need to do so.
Because I exported the database to localhost where it demonstrated the same symptom.

The first time this happened I just reset the session table.

In the process of trying to fix it on localhost I've gotten myself tied up into a knot.
I guess I need to go back and read the part about recreating the site from a backup.
I'm missing some piece to the puzzle. But - that's not for this thread.

Jeff

Understandable.

Tried to use mysql to "Repair DB" on the web host?

Also, phpmyadmin "Optimize" the suspected table?

Or, the hash did not affect the DB properly.

Good luck!

I did the phpadmin repair table but all tables checked okay.
No, haven't tried an Optimize. Are suggesting either
may have mushed the hash or are you asking if I tried
either to troubleshoot?

I appreciate your help. For now, I think I'd best go back to
getting a good backup and restore. At least then I will
know what is the actual problem and what I caused.

Not phpmyadmin, mysql "Repair DB", under "Modify Databases".

But since we're on the subject, you can go into a table with phpmyadmin:
"Operations" tab, at the bottom left are these:

Click thru all of them and try again to see if this will work.

Do this once a month, one of these always finds something (Especially after php updates).

Hope this helps!

NOTHING..!!! thank you for the suggestion...I followed it..but nothing changed. The site has been updated with the latest version.....I went through phpadmin and unpublished the rokbox components on/off and there was no change either way...

the error is : Fatal error: Call to a member function registerFunction() on a non-object in /home/icygirls/public_html/cms/plugins/system/rokbox.php on line 14

line 14 refers to the following code:

$_MAMBOTS->registerFunction( 'onAfterStart', 'botRokboxSystem' );

and it was still there after i updated the joomla core files...so does this mean that it has to be somthing in the database...it has to be the rokbox extension that did not get updated with the core files and ...why doesnt the joomla system ignore that component after i have unpublished it...?

Is there a difference between unpublishing something and disabling it..?
I know I can unpublish things from the backend...can I disable them..?

Any suggestion you have will HELP...I cant re-install this things from scratch...it will kill ME...!!!

Bjorg,

Just wanted to let you know that after receiving the
security alert update for .15 I decided to rip it all out
and start over. It's turned out to be a good exercise
as I feel I have a better implementation this time.
I'm also doing backup regularly along the way.

Silly question, I'm missing where these error messages
are coming from. I've done what I thought was enable
the error logging but the log files remain zero length.

Regards, Jeff

Joomla! does not update extensions to the best of my knowledge, it is how each is written.

Perhaps update that extension?
