I'm afraid that there's some sort of parse error hidden on the page, which is not visible because display errors is set to off.
Are you allowed to use .htaccess files to overwrite php settings?

I have same problem, I seem to have access to the .htaccess file, what should I write in it ?

p.s.
I have installed it anyway on a test site, and it does seem to work anyway... but maybe I am missing something  :-*

If it's working it's ok :)
Some server wrongly say the session path isn't writable and than after that things still work. THe only place joomla uses sessions is the administrator panel. If that's working, you should be fine.

No No not the htaccess.txt file,  but make a new one with notepad. And try write :

php_value register_globals 0

php_value session.save_path '/var/lib/php4'

And save as "all file"> .htaccess

After the installation, delete the installation folder by ftp of the site.

Hi, I'm getting a similar problem in the Pre-Installation Check section...  the the save session path is unwriteable.
The only difference is that the path name is different.  Here are the contents of that section: -

          PHP version >= 4.1.0  Yes
            - zlib compression support  Available
            - XML support  Available
            - MySQL support  Available
          configuration.php  Writeable
          Session save path  /home/phpsessions, Unwriteable

In the Recommended Settings section the only one upon which I am non-compliant is Register Globals which
is ON.  In the Directory and File Permissions section everything is writeable.

I tried to make changes to the htaccess.txt file without success, and caused server errors when trying to make
and modify the .htaccess file.  It's more than likely I am doing something monumentally stupid, but help would
be greatly appreciated.  Cheers.

The session save path is related with the php.ini file! The, look for the line where it's session_path and put there efter the equal the /tmp folder or what ever to you want and confugured to be the session folder.

Aloha, i'm having my first ever steps in Joomla and while i'm setting it up for the first time i seem to have a similar error :

Quote:
PHP version >= 4.1.0  Yes
  - zlib compression support  Available
  - XML support  Available
  - MySQL support  Available
configuration.php  Writeable
Session save path  /tmp, Unwriteable

What i've already tried is making a .htaccess file with the following data in it :

Quote:
php_value register_globals 0
php_value session.save_path '/html/'

where /html is the path where i've installed Joomla on my Apache server (actually it's the default path where i install stuff like this). Help is appreciated, i already googled for it but it seems the .htaccess trick does it for most of people, except me.. Thx in advance

php_value register_globals 0
php_value session.save_path '/tmp/'

Quote:
php_value register_globals 0
php_value session.save_path '/html/tmp/'

When i do that i get a page 500 server error  :-\

Joomla is reading the php.ini file. Look in there for the sesion_path :)
Then, modify the .htaccess file ;)

I have a somewhat similar problem that I just posted on my own. That is, I have no htaccess file and all of my pre-check installation settings are green and ok except for globals being off. The trouble I have is, that I can not create or use a preexisting DB I've created on my hosting service. I can create and access it, all the information I'm inserting in step 1 is correct, but I get error "incorrect name and password" which after talking to my livechat support and logging into my DB in phpadmin, I think I have to direct or clarify something in the joomla install. I'm dumbfounded as to how I can ftp up the installation folder have access to things such as mysql and phpadmin and yet the installation will not go through.

If anyone cares, I just posted this problem in more detail and again am confused that my problem is not an FAQ since I would assume newbies would have similar issues. I had no idea just trying to install on a hosting server could be so much trouble and cost me 3 days or time.

You have to edit php.ini file.
You will see a portion of the file that has ; in front of session.save_path = "/tmp"
remove the ; in front of that line and restart apache server (apachectl graceful).
It should now work!

Simply create the /tmp folder in your Joomla installation directory (or create a tmp folder and upload it via FTP.)
Edit (or create/upload if does not exist) .htaccess

insert this:
php_value register_globals 0
php_value session.save_path /tmp

reload your browser, you should see:

Session save path  Writeable
/tmp

if it says Unwriteable, simply change permissions to 0777 (rw)

Hi,

I have the captioned problem and would like to share my troubleshooting experience for your reference.

I tested it on a Synology DS106e (with Chinese version of Joomla!) and a DS107e in English.

After creating the necessary DB, user/id in the SOHO servers and expanded the joomla zip files
into the web drive (ie accessible publicly, writable), I then edit the index.php file by putting in the
the following string as the first line

init_set ('session.save_path',"/tmp");

where /tmp is created under joomla, which is a directory under the web drive, i.e. W:/joomla/tmp

This will only 'cheat' the installation programme, it will show /tmp, writable in the checklist. The installation
will complete with no problem. However, if you check the administration section after the installation, it
will give you "session save path - none " in the system information menu.

To overcome it, copy the same string into the configuration.php, which is created by the installation
programme, as the first line. Then restart joomla and check the system information menu again, it
will show you the session pave as /tmp.

Hope this will be helpful in some way.

Samueln :)
