Before I compose this post, I had searched this forum and found some solutions for PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) error when installing or uploading extensions in zip format.

There seems have 3 method to solve it:

But none of the above post discussed the problem of downloading.


My problem is: I installed Remository version 3.41 on Joomla 1.0.12 and set up my downloading area. Then I upload many files in zip format (compressed with winRAR 3.7 beta1). This downloading area worked very well for nearly 10 months. Recently I used a tool for Joomla named JTS and do some directory permission change ( 777 to 755) and database optimization when this tool indicated me to do that.

From then on members on my website complain that ALL those files downloaded from my website was broken. When they try to install those zip format extensions downloaded, they get error message saying Unrecoverable error "PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10)".

Next, I uninstalled my winRAR and sue 7-zip to handle with zip format files. Upload my zip files with Filezilla instead of via the HTTP uploading in Remository component. But the PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) error still exists.

Why ?

My hosting agent said they had not change anything on the server recently.

How to fix this problem ?

Comment out the following variable (in php.ini):

;mbstring.func_overload = X

In fact, my hosting provider had already commented that line out.

But now the problem is still there.

If you made changes to the folder permissions, you might want to try fiddling with them again perhaps.

Yes, I did changed some permissions according to the indication by JTS tool.

But I can't remember which folders had been changed.

I just made a new test a moment ago. I can upload and install component in zip format without any error. It seems that my server can handle uploading well.

Now I can't understand why those files, in zip format or in tar format, will be broken when downloaded through my Remository ?

Very annoying issue.
