I don't like user managment in Joomla.
I thought that is normal, that the administrator (in any CMS) can make so many user groups, he will  - to make some content items vissible only for specific users. I don't mind registred users in Joomla, but registred users they should belong to a specific group, for them is specific content visible.

I am happy that 1 component all around the world solve the problems with many user groups in Joomla.
It is JACL Plus (www.byostech.com) - it is not perfect, but it is the first thing I saw, which tries to solve this problem.

So I propose to solve this problem in Joomla team.

"New user and access control system" is planned for future versions,
see the Road Map: http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/23/61/

JACLPlus ( http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/ )
is an Access Control List for the Front-end.
It requires some modifications in the Joomla core though...

For the back-end there's a Commercial Extension available:
JBAM: Joomla Backend Access Manager
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/

I've only just started using it, but it seems like CB has at least some of the functionality you are asking about.

Having said that, group assignment is long overdue in Joomla! core.

In CB you could not add users to specific groups (I don´t mean the groups, which are from beginning).

There's another component, Group Jive, which allows to set up groups and works with CB.
You can find it at joomlapolis in the downloads.

You could also try Access Granted:  ;) http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/

edited to correct component name -sorry

I may have to revise that, 499.99 seems a bit steep for this level of functionality, especially when their demo site is 404'd.

Their free installation offer ends today-- I wonder how many takers they will have with a non-working demo...?

$499.99 is for the enterprise version.  For a single domain it's $97.85.  Sounds very reasonable to me for what it does.  I am going to try it out.  The demo is by request only, not open to the public.

OIC. This was definitely not clear from the demo link.
They might want to add a short message to indicate as much, unless I completely missed it.

Thanks for letting my know about the single site version, Don.

Thanks everyone for all the links and suggestions ~ I've asked my Joomla WebGuru about this functionality every time I've talked to him - now I can finally get started using this functionality (in advance of 1.5 deployment) with these alternatives.

Of the two mentioned (Group Access & Access Granted) which is most stable & functional?

Do both work with Community Builder? (I am already maxing out the functionality of CB).

I am a Joomla newbie, however in the past year I've become a devotee and rapidly getting up to speed for all my websites. ~ J :D

@ barnett: sorry, wrong name given, and had not seen your question - here's a link to the main domain: http://www.groupjive.org/
