I think you are not entirely correct here.

There is actually significant disagreement in the SEO world to whether branding should be first in the page title. That might be the name of your site or company.

Digging deeper though, the debate revolves around whether to have it appended or preprended to the page title.

What is most telling for me though is both experts and big sites have the sitename in the title in different places.

This clearly indicates this IS a setting that needs to be changed on a site basis.

For what its worth, the best setup I've seen on Joomla sites is the one available for 1.0 via the SEF Patch:

1) Ability to add unique HTML page title (normal page title used if left empty)
2) Ability to order page title / site name as desired

Its a great solution for SEO.
