menu Item - Parameter "Unique Itemid"

Post by 55thinking » Thu Jul 13, 2006 11:23 am

This parameter is available when creating menus items like :
  • Link - Content Item
  • Link - Static Content
What's the use of this parameter. Does anyone know exactly what it does and why it has been created ?

Thanks for your help

We may not be able to control the wind, but we can always adjust our sails

Yes it does

P.s. Do you know where the "unique itemid"is used for?

the unique Itemid has the following meaning:

If a menu entry has a unique Itemid, and you assign the same content twice to a menu, then your menu highlights the first ocurence of that content in your menu. If it has no unique Itemid, your menu will always highlight that menu entry which you just clicked.

As an example, on our site, we have the same content linked twice in the menu:
http://fachschaft.etec.uni-karlsruhe.de ... ew/88/493/
http://fachschaft.etec.uni-karlsruhe.de ... ew/88/486/
Unique Itemid is set to off. Otherwise, the menu would show the first link where it should show the second one.

Does this answer your question? I hope I could make myself clear enough.
Best,
Enno

I simply do not understand what's the use of this parameter if set to YES. Could you provide a practical example of such use ?

Thank you

This parameter did not exist in previous versions of Joomla! It has been added sometime around 1.0.9/1.0.10 if I remember correctly. Before that, the default "setting" of unique itemid was a hardcoded "YES". I never understood why one would need that and always disabled it for me anyway. So I can't provide a practical example of such use...

Here is an example:

On the main level of your menu, you have a link that is the same as some buried sub item. Which of the two gets activated when selected? Depending on site design, you may want them independently activated, you may want the top level item to be the one always activated, or you may want the sublevel item to be always activated.

Now it sounds like the way this feature is implemented it is somewhat incomplete and mostly useless in its current state.
