Installation Manual for Joomla! on GoDaddy servers

As I wanted to install Joomla on my GoDaddy hosting account I search this forum to find some kind of instructions. The only information I found let me to believe it was quite hard to install Joomla on GoDaddy servers with a lot of issues, but since I already had my domains hosted at GoDaddy I wanted to first try to get a Joomla installation working before making drastic decisions and chance providers.

Eventually I turned out that it was not only easy to install Joomla on a GoDaddy server but it worked very well too.

I wanted to share this information with the Joomla community so I decided to write some kind of manual on how to install Joomla on GoDaddy hosting account.

My main reasons for choosing GoDaddy as my preferred provider are that they very cheap, provide a lot of disk space (cheapest hosting account is 5000MB for only $3.95 per month) and their support is superb! Of cause this is my opinion.

I have 2 joomla sites hosted @ godaddy (their cheap/cheap linux hosting). How is performance for you? I've unfortunately found it to be a bit slow... anyone care you share their experience?

I have experienced the same. Definately slower than other hosts that I have Joomla and Mambo sites on.

I'm hosting multiple joomla accounts on their cheapest hosting account, and I hosting them also in the same account, because I use also multiple domain names to point to the same hosting account I needed a fixed IP. I noticed some speed increase after the fixed IP was enabled for the hosting account. Anyways GoDaddy is not blazing fast I must admit, but surely acceptable. In my opinion - value for money: yes! You get what you pay for, isn't it.

I want to unzip the joomla.zip file which contains the full installation of Joomla.

I am hosting with GoDaddy on Linux, but they don't give SSL/Telnet access so I can unzip the file online...
I don't have fast internet access, thus copying the file over as a zip is easier and then unzipping anmd installing from there...

Any help would be great!

There's no way of unzipping joomla doning this on a standard hosting account. Your best bet is just to upload the files using a ftp client with the ablity to queue the files so you are sure everything was uploaded succesfully. A good free ftp application I use is SmartFTP availble for download on http://www.smartftp.com.

Windows Hosting plan runs ASP. Joomla needs PHP in order to run so your stuck to Linux. You can easly (and for free) convert your current hosting plan from Windows to Linux from the GoDaddy control panel.

Uhmmm, obviously GoDaddy has a download limit of 100x and that limit was reached. I re-shared it so you can download it again. Will find a more permanent place before the limit is reached again.

I followed this manual up to page 2 ftp'd files to root directory and unable to get the preinstallation check to run?

Please help

This might be caused due to an incomplete upload of the joomla files.

Delete everything (joomla related ofcause

) and upload using in reliable ftp client. See posts above.

Maybe a silly question but… Can you check the type of hosting you try to install Joomla in the GoDaddy administration pages? Eq. Windows Hosting or Linux Hosting?

Are you using a Evaluation hosting account?

There might be something wrong with other software or previous installations you did on the hosting account. If you do not have data on your hosting account it might be an idea to get rid of everything so you start with a clean sheet… A trick to accomplish this is to change the hosting type to Windows Hosting and then back to Linux Hosting. Be aware: you will loose all information in your hosting account.

I have a GoDaddy account and they now have an automated install (for Linux hosting) where you just choose Joomla and it gets automagically downloaded to /joomla

Has anyone tried multiple Joomla sites on GoDaddy? That is, I have this setup:

http://www.mainsite.com/site2, domain name http://www.site2.com
http://www.mainsite.com/site3, domain name http://www.site3.com

GoDaddy installed Joomla in http://www.mainsite.com/joomla. I want to use Joomla for http://www.mainsite.com/site2 and http://www.mainsite.com/site3, but these three sites have completely different personalities and will not be sharing users, templates, or content.

Has anyone done anything like that with a GoDaddy account?

I'm hosting serveral sites in one hosting account and the following is working for me:

I have created a sub-directory named www in the root of my joomla account with the domain names as sub-directories (without the www):

At last ftp the Joomla installation files in each sub-directory and install them seperatly. Works like a charm for me!

Wow. Thanks. I'm really a rank newbie, so forgive this dumb question, but let's say that I set it up like you did:

When I want to use the administrator module to work with, say, site 1, how do I invoke it?

Does http://www.site1.com/administrator work?

And are you able to use different templates for each site without any problem?

Yup, the installations are completely seperate since the server redirect fakes the URL. The different Joomla sites are not aware of each other at all...

You can access their administartor urls like: http://www.site1.com/administrator/
(!! DON'T FORGET THE SLASH FORWARD AFTER ADMINISTATOR)
This is the only "bug" I have found so far using this method.

What I remember from the installation make sure that during installation the Absolute Path is something like: /home/content/u/s/e/user1/html/www/site1.com
I believe the installation of Joomla screws this up.

Any chance of Joomla hosting this ?? Because this is exactly what I think I might need to solve my all day headache of trying to setup Joomla on a Godaddy hosted site.....

I hate to be a huge pain in the lower behind, but when I try accessing the pdf its coming back with an error "unrecognised token -1.0711q". Appears to have been documented in Adobe homepage here http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322743.html. If it wouldn't be too much trouble would you be able to upload it one more time please?!! as per the suggestion solution 2....

My mistake, forgot to set file type to binary while uploading. Anyway found a new solution (too bad I found this option just now $:-\$ ) it seems to be possible to attach files to a post... so I did. Hope the download problems are gone forever....
