I think we need to consider the availability of domain names when considering the option.

We don't want to identify the perfect name and then confuse everyone with a complicated URL.

Maybe the answer is to indentify a list of 10 names, secure a good URL and take a vote.

That would a very hard job... finding a domainname that isn't claimed yet.
Mambo didn't have http://www.mambo.com but did grow as one of the worlds leading cms!

"Free" as in "freedom", "step" as in using your feet.

You can think of it in relation to dancing, if you want. Even if you don't, it conveys movement and progress. Plus both suggestions are short, easy to remember and pronounce, and don't mean anything odd in any language that I know. We can "step together" and show solidarity as a community.

If nobody objects, I'd like to put the naming issue to a branding agency as a pro bono job. If we can get a good one to work on the name, the project could potentially get a great deal of publicity.

I like the name "Freed" but I'd also like to throw in my 2 cents for "Archetype" as the new CMS name. To me that's what The-CMS-With-No-Name should (and will) be, the archetypal CMS that everyone wants to emulate

I had the same idea, Mamba would be nice...

From Wikipedia:
Mambas, of the genus Dendroaspis, are tree dwelling extremely rapidly moving snakes of Africa. ("Dendroaspis" is literally "tree snake".) Names are quite close to Mambo, but different enough for trademark issues.

Why not use ***Mambo*** (something with Mambo inside, e.g. insideMambo) and registering that from e.g. Germany? I think there is no trademark problem....
And in Germany you could create a "e.V.", something like a certified community with no money purposes.
Just ask Alex Kempkens, I think he should know more about that.

First both cause I though community really appreciate and nice ... And mambo is like a light in the dark CMS choice ... And TurboCMS cause I fall in love of Mambo like i've done 6 month ago with TubroLinux ....

Well - my 2 cents

Don't have a good suggestion for a name, but I like the sound of beeing a mamber, a person using $ambo - so I hope the new name will be just as good for naming the users as naming the product.

Hense, I not to fond of names link "Fork" - I wouldn't call myself a "Forker" and be proud of it
