Hi,

I can't install the french language pack for Joomla 1.5. I downloaded it on Joomlacode but when I try to install it, I get an error message saying "Error! Could not find an XML setup file in the package.".

I think some installation files are not in the right place in the package, but I don't know how to fix it.

Does someone have an idea please ?

You don't need to install it. First you need to unpack it and with an FTP program simple copy those folders to your site.

But there's an installer for languages packs in Joomla 1.5, it could be better - easier and properer - if we can install it this way.

You could try the French site/admin packages found at the Files tab in the blue bar here:

*Note translation packages are still a work in progress and will first be finalized when we reach 1.5 Stable 

I have the same error message : "Error! Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.". That's because there is no XML file in these packages, so it can't be installed automatically using the Joomla package installer.

You have to install these pakages manually.

Yes, I understand that.

I just say that it could be good if the packages were installable using the installer, but nevermind.

I'm making an extension for Joomla (a plugin and a component) and I was wondering how to make an easy installable translation package. I wanted to take the french package as an example.

I downloaded the Joomla 1.0.15 version of that file and it turned out to be a complete Joomla package with the French language files already installed. Naturally the language install failed. All I did to correct the problem was extract the files from the zip file, then I looked in the language folder and found french.php and french.xml - I added those to my own zip file which I called french.zip. Using the Joomla installer for Languages worked just fine when I selected my new zip file.

for information, in Joomla 1.5 if you copy directly the directory fr-FR in language and administrator/language (from the french all in one package) it works very good (I work like that to create the translation )

Sorry to be so dumb, but where do I install the language pack? In the root directory? in Languages? Or where? I loked at the en_GB folder in Languages and the files look nothing like the ones in the French language download.

You just have to install your language pack from the Joomla Administrator panel (Extension menu > Install).

How to proceded :
#1 : download the french language pack from links (in previous post).
#2 : So, you have a ZIP filepack (remind where is it).
#3 : Open your Joomla Administration Panel
#4 : Select Extensions menu
#5 : Select Install submenu.
#6 : upload and install from your computer the french language pack
#7 : enjoy ^^

Thank you for your reply. I am fully aware of how to install from within Joomla. However, if you have read the previous posts you will see that I need to upload by ftp because this latest version does not install from within Joomla because there is no xml file.
