Problem with UTF-8 code
I am almost done with my one year subscription in a domain and i am using joomla to pump up our site...but, i still was not able to resolve my problem with regard to the UTF-8 code. Anyone please help! I am a beginner and would really like a step by step resolution. If anyone wants to see the problem please visit http://www.rcj.pl and you can immediately see the mess. Since the site should originally be in polish, you can see that it's all messed up. every time i go to the site, i always have to click on VIEW and select UTF-8 in the options to see the proper characters. What should i do so that those who will visit the site, upon entering, will see already the readable content, and will not anymore go to VIEW and select the proper code in order to read? PLEASE HELP.

Re: Problem with UTF-8 code
I assume that you have 1.0.x version.
Database must be set as utf8_unicod_ci (and all tables in the base)
In the template/index.php must be (before <head>):
It is good also to change ISO in administrator/templates/joomla_admin/index.php:
Language files must be saved as utf8.
In the language file (if you have several must do the same) ISO must be:
In the main Joomla folder make a pnp.ini file and put in it:
If all that doesn't work you can add next line at the top of the file .htaccess but often it is no good idea because of the settings of server:
Database must be set as utf8_unicod_ci (and all tables in the base)
In the template/index.php must be (before <head>):
Code: Select all
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
In the language file (if you have several must do the same) ISO must be:
Code: Select all
DEFINE('_ISO','charset=UTF-8');
Code: Select all
default_charset = "utf-8"
Code: Select all
php_value default_charset utf-8

Re: Problem with UTF-8 code
You will need to do this via ftp, ssh or your webhosting control panel. You may find that something like Joomlaexplorer will also help.bhingrcj wrote:Thanks for the help leftfield. but my problem is, i could not write on my administrator template because it says there UNWRITABLE. is there a way that i can make it WRITABLE? Give that a try.

Re: Problem with UTF-8 code
Now, it all got messed up. i tried doing what leftfield told me but right now i could not anymore log on to my administrator account. all i get is ERROR. i could no longer post something or change something in the site since i could not anymore log. A friend told me that i touched the Administrator index.php where i shouldn't. now i don't know how to restore everything.

Re: Problem with UTF-8 code
Just unzip Joomla! version you have (in your computer), find same file you changed in administrator folder and copy over it. Use Ftp to copy or use any access you have. Probably some mistake occurred while adding code. In this case dont change anything in administrator folder, just do all the rest i wrote above.
Btw: Whenever you do something on your website do the backup first.

Re: Problem with UTF-8 code
hello leftfield, thanks for your patience. I am a novice at this that is why i really don't have any idea how it all works. right now i have searched the computer for the version that i downloaded (the one of joomla) all i can find is the joomla language file which i guess is not what you want me to find. if there's no way to find the joomla that i needed, what should i do? thanks.

Hello Leftfield, i just did it. i followed what you said and i downloaded the index.php of joomla 1.0.15 version and it restored my access to the website. thank you very much. now i am left still with the problem of the language. i have to work on it without touching the administrator folder anymore.

Re: Problem with UTF-8 code
Hello leftfield, at this very moment i finally solved the problem of the UTF-8. Thanks to you. it was just a matter of spacebars. with the exact spacebars i was able to change the code for the language and everything was ok after that. I am really happy now that the page is fully functional. all i have to do is to put in modules, components, etc.
