its not same as u think .... nepali and indian language comes frm same script but the way of speaking and writing does matters ..... and if u are making a nepali news website then u dont want to have hindi words....

If Nepali and Hindi have differences, a new language pack should be made.
When I suggested to post in the Indic forum, it was because all the languages from that part of the world are dealt with there.

Hey bud, you are absolute write, but we actually write is as "Jumla" not "Joomla" but pronouce pretty much the same.

probably first nepali site in joomla , i made it like 1 year ago , i also made language pack like read more in your site suppose to have like baki pada and all those in actual nepali language and in the admin panel also , the words such as article would say lekh and all those

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do the modification. Meanwhile, I would like to know if there are utilities which help editing the joomla language ini files in a little easier way.

You're right. You can login with demo user provided on the website and see nepalization there. I admit, it's not complete. But it will be soon.

At the very first beginning, we planned to work on frontend language for the default templates, components, plugins, and modules of a clean joomla 1.5.7 installation. As soon as it's completed, we will start the backend part. So far we've completed the translation of the all of the default components including:

  com_frontpage
  com_mailto
  com_media
  com_messages
  com_newsfeeds
  com_poll
  com_search
  com_user
  com_weblinks
  com_wrapper

You might have seen some text in English in the site because currently we are working on the templates, modules, and plugins and the job's not completed yet.

I suggest to use the Translation Manager Component.

All work should be done locally, using the last version of the en-GB ini files.
This component has not been updated for long and shows some bugs on recent Joomla versions. I therefore suggest to use a 1.5.4 install to work on the ini files.

First change in your existing files all occurences of hoomla-np to ne-NP

We are making a serious effort to make the language as meaningful as possible. But there are some serious problems. It's really tough to translate into Nepali language because:

In English, a sentence has the following forms:

Subject + [Auxiliary Verb] + Various Forms of Verb + Object

But in Nepali, we have

Subject + Object + [Auxiliary Verb] + Various Form of Verb

In English, we have phrases like this
Owner + Preposition + Object
Eg.
Parent Window with Browser Navigation Options
Tea without sugar


But in Nepali we write
Object + Preposition + Owner
Like these,
"Browser Navigation owned by Parent Window"
"Sugar non possessing tea"

We don't have forms such as "Parent Window with Browser Navigation Options" in our language

Conclusion

Due to grammatical differences in English and Nepali, the core language ini file has been a tough cup of tea without sugar and milk!

And the conversion for this line is really challenging in Nepali Language if you want 100% grammatical accuracy ...

same thing i went thru but my one cent , as i am nepali and there are many english word not translation available in nepal , its better you just write the "word" in nepali font "word" maybe that works

Yes, in general this is the case. But if we could switch these %s to the place we want, the translation would have been far more simpler and meaningful.

For example (please do not be specific, the %s here are hypothesized)

Ex 1.0

Hello %s,\n\n%s\nhas been just submitted by User:\n%s\n\n\nPlease go to %s/%s to view and approve this %s.

would generate something like:

Hello Thomas,

'Test Article' has been just submitted by User:
'Thomas'

Please go to 'http://testserver.com/index.php?option=com_content.....'
to view and approve this 'Article'


But in Nepali, we need something like this to be more meaningful

Hello 'Thomas',

User 'Thomas' has submitted 'Test Article'.

For this 'Article' be viewed and approved, this 'link http://testserver.com/index.php?option=com_content.....' should be clicked.


and we would translate into something like this

Hello %s,\n\%s has submitted %s\n\n\nFor this %s be viewed and approved, this link %s/%s should be clicked.

Let's get the final translation of Ex 1.0 here,

It would be generated into something like this:

Now this is not meaningful at all. Be it in English, would have been bad reading experience; but in Nepali, it'd be the worst.

We have completed the 99.9% of translation, but we're stuck on few things.

Anyone there with serious suggestions ?

This is something that has already been discussed among the Translation Teams and some improvements have been made in code since 1.5 release.
In fact, you can change the order of the variables in the ini file by using the code

text %2$s text %1$s text

where the number relates to the order of the variable in the original code.
The issue is that we have no comment in the ini file to state each time this occurs what are the order of the variables, thus forcing you to test live or search for the variables in the code itself.

A simple example:
in administrator/components/com_installer/models/install.php
line 92:

Code: Select all

$msg = JText::sprintf('INSTALLEXT', JText::_($package['type']), JText::_('Success'));

Code: Select all

 JText::_($package['type'])

is variable 1 (Below it is "Module")

Code: Select all

 JText::_('Success')

is variable 2 (Below it is "Success")

The string is in:
administrator/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_installer.ini
INSTALLEXT=Install %s %s

which gives in English when you install a module:
Install Module Success

If I change the string to:
INSTALLEXT=%2$s Install %1$s

I will get:
Success Install Module
