Irish language translation?

Post by batmanjd » Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:43 pm

Hi, is anyone working on an Irish/Gaelic language tranalstion for Joomla?

I see that Adam Eterno and Rollerball have mentioned Gaelic in some locked posts...

I'd like to get a project off the ground but don't want to duplicate effort.

Also, is there any advice as to how to get going on a translation project?  A translator who is willing to do some major work mentioned that open-source translation files are usually in PO format.  Is this the case for Joomla?

Help much appreciated - thanks.

I cant see a listing for gaelic in the official translations.

Joomla! doesnt use the po format etc

You can find everything you need to know at dev.joomla.org in the localisation section

Welcome on our forums.

We would indeed welcome a Gaelic translation.
For Joomla 1.0.x versions, it is just a matter of translating the english, php file and change the xml file to reflect changes, with the correct encoding for the language.

For Joomla 1.5 (at alpha stage today), please follow Brian advice.
We are working with simple ini files which have to be translated in your language and encoded utf8 through a good editor.
Better download the nightly build or SVN to get a hand on it.

Thanks Brian & infograf768

I've had a look at the dev section - that helps.  It is clearer than the bit I saw a while ago on it.

Can you tell me where to get the nightly build and what an SVN is?

There are two different versions of Gaelic, Irish and Scotish, so I'll use the language and country codes to distinguish this Irish Gaelic from a possible future Scotish Gaelic translation.  They are different enough to need different translations if both are wanted.

I've been working on the texts for all the ini files.  As you can imagine, getting them all translated will take a bit of time.

I'd like to focus the translators on those ini files that are used for the frontend - not initially those that are used exclusively for the backend.  I see that the "english.ini" seems to have a lot of frontend texts, so I'm working on that.  There are also others that seem to be module or component focused, some of which seem to be exclusively for backend use.

Can you point me in the right direction to get the frontend texts translated as soon as possible for testing while the backend only texts are still being translated?  For example, is there a list of ini files for those that contain frontend only, mixed frontend/backend, and backend only texts?

Much appreciated

There are 3 language folders for 1.5
The root folder (mostly front-end)
The Installation folder
The administrator folder

Wow - three sets of files, and I thought that I was getting on well with 25% of the admin set! :-(

It makes sense now.  Would I be right in thinking that the root ini files are the only ones that are used by the frontend?  If so, I could concentrate on them initially.

I suggest you first provide a 1.0.x Gaelic translation and create a project on Forge to propose it to users.
http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/1092/73/
That would be a concrete approach and fastly done.
Then propose your Translation in the Joomla Extension Directory:
http://extensions.joomla.org/content/view/15/63/
Then, as you are working on the 1.5 core translation, let me know when you are ready and I will manage to let you access in the Translation Private forum and have your language officially listed here

Thanks for the reply infograf768
Some thoughts though - I have limited time and helpers for translation, so I was thinking of bypassing the 1.0 translation.  By the time I get v1.0 finished, it may be redundant very soon.  My timescale for completion is around December, with a few other component files to translate as well.  There are many of the 2,500 texts that are not used in 1.5, so I'd like to provide a translation that can be used when 1.5 is available.  My timescale would be pushed out further and affect some website releases if I did v1.0 first.  I am working on some other projects at the same time which have a close deadline - If only I had more time and helpers...
I could do the v1.5 and when finished propose it on the Extension directory, if you think that that is the best way forward for it then.

Thinking outside the box here, but Foras na gaeilge might give you a grant?

I have almost completed a Joomla 1.0 site with an Irish version. However the translation was commissioned by a private concern, and the site is not yet live. I will enquire with them about whether they would be happy to put the translated system file into the public domain. Might take a little while, as I am very snowed under :(

Hi,
We've uploaded the Joomla! 1.0 some time ago to the extensions page.  Steve Jacobs did a translation some time ago and he put up for all to use at the language section of the Joomla! extensions site at:
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/

I have some third party translations files being translated at present and will add them when available (JEvents, Facileforms and Jom Comment).

I'm also about 25% the way through Joomla! v1.5, but need more help on that to get it moving faster.  Help would be much appreciated, if available.

If you have any other component or module files that could be added, let us know.

All the best, John Duffy.

Hi John,

very interested personally, and a good chance that I can get some part-timers to help....
If you can send me, for example, an excel sheet with english terms, I can start a process where some Gaeilgeoirs can start work on translating the terms.

Apologies if this is not the way it works, but I've no firm idea on the actual process. let me know and I'll do my best to help/facilitate :)

I suggest you move your project to the new forge joomlacode as the old one will be closed.
Also, let me know when you are ready to join our Translation Teams.  :)

Thank you Jean-Marie,

I will not have time to manage or administer this project, unfortunately.
If someone assumes this role in the future, I will be able to get some teachers to help with English -> Irish translations.

I hope someone read this in the future and uses the help I can offer. Thanks again!

Hi Infograf,
I tried to log in some time ago but the site was down or something each time I tried.
I'm also just able to spend the time on things now again after some time consuming issues preventing me over the last several weeks - so I'll do so soon.
Thanks for the reminder.

Hi seaghan,
That sounds great.  That's the way I've been doing it so far.  The short terms have been mostly translated, but the phrases/sentences need translated now.  I'll send you the file so far - you can see the individual terms translated and use them for the phrases/sentences.  If you could let me know which ones you could attempt to translate, so that I can avoid duplicating getting the rest translated by others.  I'm going to be approaching more people shortly to try to get them to work on it too.

Has there been any updates on the Irish language version? I am interested in a Scottish Gaelic version but would be very interested in what has happened since last postings.

Thanks

I expected to show some progress at this point, and had planned to get some teachers involved in helping - but I'm struggling with my own work/business and can't seem to get the time. more later ...

I too have found it difficult to get people to translate on a non-profit basis.  Promises haven't materialised much to date.  I've had someone translating the last few texts to upgrade to 1.0.12, as well as Jevents, Jom Comment, Facileforms, but after a few months there was no progress.  I've just given them to another translator on a commercial translation basis since I need them to get a site going.  This translator is also willing to make an effort on the remaining v1.5 texts on a non-commercial basis, and can be relied on to make progress.  So, in a few weeks I should have the first of those posted.  V1.5 should follow sometime afterwards.

I have one person who says he is translating the V1.5 texts, but it is making slow progress.  Reliable translators are hard to get hold of - its really frustrating.  No reliable timesceale yet on completion.
But I'll have the 1.0.12 remaing texts in a few weeks at the latest, so should be able to put them up shortly afterwards.

Are you able to assist in translation?
