one important note about trademarks, and other people can probably chime in here...

If you search through the federal trademark search engine (http://www.uspto.gov), you may notice that there are multiple entries for certain names. That is because duplicate trademark entries can exist in separate markets.

There can be a BlueFox trademark for a software company and a BlueFox trademark for a medical rehabilitation center. (These are both fictitious names by the way) The only limitation there is that the BlueFox software company probably couldn't get into the medical industry.

You can also register names at the state level, but it does not protect the trademark outside of that state. Using BlueFox as an example (Just a name I pulled out of my head) if you go to bluefox.com you will find a company that creates fishing lures. On their website, it shows a logo with the "R" symbol next to it. That states that it is a registered trademark. If it is a registered trademark, they must've done it at the state level rather than with the Federal US Patent and Trademark Office (uspto.gov).

The only rule against this is when a name has become famous. For instance, nobody can open up a bakery called "The Microsoft Bakery" nor can you create the Toyota sweater factory.

NEW CMS NAME :: MOS
only the letter  M will stand for something else besides Mambo. They do say that new is well forgotten past

What do you get:

:: There is no need for need to fix SQL prefix of _mos,
:: Change the paths specified by the components since most of them use syntax of $mosConfig_absolute_path, $mosConfig_live_site under configuration.php.
:: This will make it backwards compatible with ANY version of Mambo
:: Will allow release of 4.5.3 in the next month or thou
:: Use existing copyryighted trademark (MOS)
:: Continue the MOS name familiar to a lot of people
:: Save some domain names such as http://www.mos-chat.com where mos prefix is used
:: Has "Open Source" in it's name
:: Stop the madness on these forums and with people registering new domain names and proposing their dog names :x

Now what what will the M stand for? You can use Melody, Mature, Memento (bad example), or whatever you choose. This however will definitely limit the range of names to pick from. I would also recommend making a new logo/banner for it to promote this reincarnation.

think the best name for the new CMS is Jambo. Thanks rhuk for this great idea. The reasons are:
JAMBO name is similar to MAMBO. This will be the way from not loose the roots of MAMBO name. Moreover is possoble to add some short words or slogans about the new JAMBO:

- "JIMB(ean) JAMBO is not MAMBO".
- "J.I.W.I.P. == JAMBO IS WORKING IN PROGRESS"
- "JAMBING == developing Jambo"
- "JAMBERS == JAMBO DEVELOPERS"
- "J&B == jambourini and brothers"
- "JAMS == JAMBO ANOTHER MODULES"

JAMBO in spanish means guy.

thats just odd..  postnukes most prolific component/module developer forked a couple years ago... now they're using fenix

I would suggest "Libre" - Free (Free/Libre Open Source Software)

Libre means free (as most of you know)

- LibreCMS
- LiCMS

I would also suggest COSMOSS (CMS+OSS) jumbled together

- it has CMS
- it has OSS
- it has MOS
- COS could mean Community Oriented System (a solid community)
- the Cosmos is a very large body (we are after all an international community)

Personally I like Open Mango which sounds fresh and tasty, but I guess it sounds too much like the old name. Since a CMS is kind of a glue that holds the website together how about Glue CMS? If you don't like the word "glue" there are many specific kinds of adhesives. Hotmelt CMS sounds nice IMO. "Two Component CMS" might give the wrong idea though *cough*.
Since the CMS is made of many parts, the greek prefix poly, meaning many, would be fiitting as part of the name. PolyPoly CMS is the first I can think of. Polymer CMS would literally mean "many parts" since meros is the greek word for part. Polymer has more than 9 million results in google but we could  go with the greek original, Polymeros. Maybe someone Greek can come up with better alternatives.

I think it would be more productive if you let go of "mambo-like" names.
I think the Core developers have requested the same within posts on this thread.

There are plenty of possibilities to develop a new, unique name that nobody has used before. Consider the name "Xaraya" for example. They took the spanish word for Manta Ray (Raya) and created a new word (Xaraya) which technically doesn't mean anything. Their name was inspired by "raya" so the logo uses the image of a Manta Ray.

As far not wanting to change the prefix or suffix on table names, I'm sure there will be some conversion tools made available for moving data from Mambo to the new CMS (with a new table suffix). There will have to be if they expect any people to convert existing mambo sites to the new CMS.

just to stick my 2c in

I would like to see a name that is easy to say - therefore easy to spell

I would like it to be free of any connection to m*mb*

I would like it to have a cool meaning

It should be international

A word from the esperanto language would be nice - it will be unique enough for domains etc, have a good translation in every language and would express the GLOBAL nature of this community

Maybe you could do something with names of steps in the dancestyle Mambo
Cross Body (Lead)
Crossover
(Mambo) Twist
Swivel
Open Break
Pull Back

I'm presenting my handle:

Tarsiux

It's from the world's smallest monkey tarsier (tarsius syrichta), then because Linux is a symbol of open source, I had it Tarsiux. BTW, it's found mostly in Southeast Asia. The specie I mentioned can be found in the Philippines.

And these are associated with power to me:

BlackHole - sucks everything
Morph - moves one from place to place
Zapped - as in zapped by lightning, fast and easy

Hey, I like this name game... :D

Go to the Miro site, see their other CMS named Jango. Rethink this Tango silliness ;)

My g/f just had an idea to use the acronym of Web Application Framework into a word, like:

WAFER

WAFT

For instance, can't think of a decent use of those words as acronyms now, but it's sorta cool.

Web Application Framework Technology

Maybe too gimmicky ;)

Hi,

May I boldly suggest ....

numb - Which stands for "New Unified Mambo Base"

Image

Whole list of domains available ...

numbos.com
numbos.org
numbos.net
numbos.us
numbos.biz
numbos.info

Coincidentally, quite a few songs named after it, and some of the lyrics won't sound too good to Peter.

Linkin Park -  Numb
"Every step that I take is another mistake to you"

U2 - Numb

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
"I cannot put my finger on it now. The child is grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb."

Portishead - Numb

The Cure - Numb
"He's in love with a drug.  Forget everyone. He really doesn't care anymore"

Drowning Pool - Numb
"To the man looking back at me. Said why don't you go away. We've all heard your misery. You've been bleeding it for days end"

And a whole list of numb songs ... ;D

Keep the spirit alive! Stay comfortably NUMB!

Cheers!

Ok

It won't be confusing at all to create a bunch of components and modules for the new CMS that start with MOS.

They certainly wouldn't be confused with any Mambo components or modules that start with MOS.

Name changing - it's very bad idea. Do you know how many project's have mambo as part of name?
Much better idea win mambo brand from miro - because they have already change name of commercial release from mambo to Jango. Why not? Try to register Mambo CMS as official project brand.

Jambo - best idea from all post before.
MOS - the name hardly to hear  :-\ (mos=Moscow)
Salsa - to many sites about this dance
Tango - I know minimum 3 IT project with this hame

Try this names:
Atika
AZ
Bongo
Chek
Dumbo  ;D
Force (Use the force!  ::) (c) Yoda)
Kongo
Rueda (when salsa dancing in circule)
Tanda (short from Tananda, it's name)
Visk

Bettre that name will be have the same transcription in all languages. And:
- Maxim short (5 letters will be optimal)
- No "R", "L", "Sh" sounds in name
- New logo and favorite color must be orange

If you change one of my variants, please, let me know about this with PM or e-mail that I can register domain name for my project before that another "good guys" will do it. Maybe it will be good idea to send e-mail to all favorite mambo sites, before anonce new name.

That might not be so good since there is a BIG COMMERCIAL CMS called Polopoly and they will probably think that "we" are moving against them..

You could look at like this:

Mambo is carrying on as usual - it just moved servers.

Miro is attempting a fork

Miro need a new name for mambo.

They are the ones going off in a different direction.

The Mambo community moving hardware should not mean that we need to rename.

There seems to be a real possibility of claiming the right to use the name.

But Miro has the Copyright for Mambo.. ie. we would have to fight for the right to use it WORLDWIDE.. not a good thing..

Unfortunately another huge project beat us to this one, but in my opinion, this would've been perfect, just because of what it means:

Ubuntu CMS

"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are".

That other project is of course Ubuntu Linux.

My Sugestion is:

Image

Why?
When i first use mambo, i think this is the most awesome cms i have ever use. And i think most of us here feel the same way as i do.

What does it mean?
I think the word Awesome is self explanatory  :P besides, i cant say nothing else about Mam80 except the word Awesome!

What's up with the punctuation?
I think most of you already know the the mos flower is actualy an asterisk to symbolize security (ithink :p ). I added the punctuation for a replacement for the mos flower, as it would represent integrity and the voice of the cummunity (at least the way i see it :))

I dont like the logo looks like!
do dtry to make your own version, even a scetch will do. I think most of the ppl here are far better in graphic design than me. Beside, i think this is a Democracy not a Mirocracy  :P

The orange color, remind me to much of mambo!
By all means, change the color as you please  ;D i would be more than happy to give you the master image

How about taking the old name and play word association games with it:
Mambo - Voodoo priestess
Voodoo - Mix of many different religions

There have to be a lot of cool words associated with voodoo that are unclaimed.

Or take it a step furter:
Creole - People of mixed descent (There is already a creole PHP DB abstraction layer)
Matlai - Swahili for sunrise (new dawn for Mambo and all that) which is in turn a cocktail mix.

Anyway, just thinking out loud, don't think these are necessarily any better than the names on offer.
But maybe it's a new way of thinking about this.

Well, I have another suggestion, and a comment.

Suggestion: Avancee - from the French. Meaning "Advanced" or "Progressed".
The .com was taken last December, but is not yet in use.  .net is for sale on the market and the .org is up for grabs.
There are also no copyright or trademark issues that I could find.

Comment: I feel we should steer clear of any name which is generic or in common use.  If this new incarnation of the project goes on to pick up more awards, or becomes seriously world-famous, the name will need to be protected.  I am annoyed enough that M*ro are taking the identity away this time, I do not want to see it happen again in the future.
