1) EVERYTHING is aimed at making the interface simple

2) Nothing

I'm sorry for being rude, but this has been discussed numerous times and JACL plus does not provide all the necessary functions and it is not really usable from my point of view. There is a LOT more to the proper ACL implementation than just plugging in phpGACL. The goal is to be able to use any system, starting with phpGACL and ending with LDAP, J2EE or MySQL. IMHO JACLplus and also BAM are just poor tries to implement more ACL functions into Joomla and its just another patch orgie. There has been no real deep thought into both programs (I apologize, I'm doing my assumptions on BAM by the screenshots I've seen) and it has a reason when half a dozen core developers start with this and stop it again, because its to much work. I'm doing this in a google SoC now and its clear that we wont get all the stuff done that is needed for a _proper_ implementation. We can probably release a patch to implement some new functions, but I would estimate that the complete implementation would be something like a christmas present.

Thanks for the reply
I hope your Summer of Code Project is going well
If you do come up with a patch to implement some new functionality maybe you can call it JACL++ ;)

All kidding aside,
Thanks for the honest opinion on this, and your honest estimation of how long your work will take :)

Since it will probably be christmas before your work is complete,
and since I will probably have to rebuild the site at that point anyway,
I might go ahead and use JACL Plus for now on the few sites that I need to have ACL

PS
I know what you mean about "patch orgy";
I already have the LDAP hack and a few other hacks installed
and everytime there is a new update to Joomla I am pretty much manually patching everything :(

Please help,

I'm working on a project, and after one month working with joomla... I managed to understand the structure of joomla and I'm nearly done with making three components i made on my own... the thing is... i can't seem to understand how the privilages thing works exactly...I'm trying to make my users into groups...and each group has its own news...i've checked the gacl_api.class.php & gacl.class.php... but it's not working... can anybody help me...with sending me a link to a paper about the subject...a read the gacl manual... but it didnt help...coz i dont have much time to reimplement it... so if you have like steps or guidelines that i can do to solve my problem... I'll be more than thankfull...

Joomla currently does not provide a sophisticated access managment system. The phpGACL currently just adds or removes users from a group. The real ACL managment will be possible most likely in 2.0.

It has been a long time since we have any update to this thread. Does anyone know about the progress?

Lately the move from JForge to Joomlacode has taken up alot of resources. Then there is priority on 1.5 beta2, so if someone has been working on ACL I'd be very surprised. It is not in the roadmap for 1.5 either, so don't hold your breath.

Looks like we'll all have to stick with JACL Plus!

Hi,

I am writing to you about ACL in joomla I read many threads about it and find sth about JACLPLUS, I need special user that login from frondend
and this user can publish contents and just access to virtuemart panel for example  uploading his products ( CSV (Comma Separated Values)) or
make a special restriction in joomla backend menu or componets and so on, but unfortunently after installed JACLPLUS I could'nt define any new user group with these flexibility or extend the user default ability(author,publisher,admin,..). Could it be possible guide me(point me in the right direction to figuring out it)?

Thanks in advanced.
