I'm new to languages and after searching the forums for a few hours without resolution, decided to post here.

I'm highly motivated to switch from phpnuke to Joomla because my site was recently hacked and I really want to make the switch.  The site has both Japanese and English.  phpnuke was nice because you could specify which articles would show up in Japanese, Englsih, or both.  Anyhow, I think Joomla is a much better alternative.  I've installed 1.5 (most recent nightly build) in anticipation of the move to it when it is official and more stable in the future.

How can I set up Japanese in Joomla 1.5?  Is there already a language pack available?  Can't wait to see how this multilingual thing works.

Thank you!

There are many changes between original and Japanese version.
When you use original with Japanese language pack, probably you will see many garbled characters in your site.
So please use JP version.

You can download Joomla! 1.0.9 JP at Joomla! Japan
( We have not yet Joomla! 1.0.10 JP )

I actually ended up using Joomla 1.0.10 English w/ Japanese language pack (EUC) and Joomfish.  That seems to be working.  I'm afraid of the admin panel in Japanese since I can't read Japanese all that well.  The problem is that any english on the site is converted to various kanji if it has apostrophes in it.  Will English show up OK if I use the Japanese joomla?  What exactly is the difference between the two?

Can I use Joomfish with the Japanese version?

Thanks!

I have also been looking for a Japanese Language pack for Joomla 1.5 (I'm also looking to swtich my Japanese/English site from Postnuke)

I was looking into the Joomla 1.5/Jfusion/PhpBB3 combo - as I use phpbb2 with my Postnuke site

Today in my search I come upon this:

http://test-run.com/Joomla_Jfusion_phpBB3/

It seems as though this is an English version of 1.5 yet it seems to have Japanese installed, not only for Joomla 1.5 but for phpbb3!

How is this possible?

There is no author/credit as to who did this on the site.... can anyone help me out?

Thanks

-Tide

I don't know about PHPBB3 but you can download Japanese language pack for 1.5 from following.
Its full 1.5 not just language file, but I am sure you will find what you need from there... I haven't try it yet..
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.jp/jooml ... Stable.zip

OR
There is language package you can download from following:,
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jtranslation/frs/

I believe its for 1.5 , again I haven't try it yet..

And people who are using Joomla 1.X and if you are translating using Joomla Fish, you will need to change character in MySql to utf. Otherwise you will have garble character in database but not in frontsite though.

Hi all,

I'm having Japanese trouble too.
I'm running Joomla 1.5.8
Before I installed anything special I have been able to add some Japanese to my site. I can add Japanese to information about content

(http://jfniendorf.org/en/kaiandmaiyapho ... twins13mos)

However when I try to enter Japanese in an article I get ??? where Japanese should be. How do I change or add support for another character set?

I installed both ja-JP_Joomla_1.5.8_site.zip and ja-JP_Joomla_1.5.8_admin.zip
I can change the back end and front end languages for users to Japanese, however if I do and set the back end language to Japanese the control panel changes to Japanese while even if I change the front end language to Japanese I still see ??? instead of text.

I'm really confused as to why some Japanese text is displayed while other Japanese text is not displayed.

but I can't add Japanese to articles.

I get an error while trying to install "ja-JP_Joomla_1.5.8_site"... (perhaps because I have the 1.5.9 version of Joomla!?)

The error-message I get is:

JInstaller::install: File '/customers/[WEBSITENAME]/httpd.www/[DIRECTORY]/tmp/install_498138dbc5dd5/ja-JP_Joomla_1.5.8_site/ja-JP.com_menus.ini' does not exist.

Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Remove a line which contains 'ja-JP.com_menus.ini' from install.xml in your ja-JP_Joomla_1.5.8_site kit and it will be installed successfully.
