Redesigning Non-Profit Website with Joomla... question

Post by thampw » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:31 am

Hi all,

I'm quite impress with what I've read so far about Joomla and also saw some of the other websites build with Joomla. I'm trying the redesign a non-profit website with Joomla and given my non-web programming/design background, I am totally dependent on platforms like Joomla.

The non-profit website I've, provides a directory of charitable organisations in different categories, e.g. Environment, Senior Citizen, Children, etc. Each organisation have a page which describes what they do and what they need. Then depending on what categories the organisation is under, there will be a link to this page under that category.

The problem is that some organisations could be listed under more than 1 category, for example Senior Citizen and Health categories. Additionally, under each category, there'll be subcategory to list the organisations under different regions/states.

Is it possible to create a design where there's only one page per organisation but I can publish the link to different categories and/or sub-categories?

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with Joomla's terminology, hope my question is not too confusing.

Any advice and help on how I can redesign my website would be greatly appreciated as I'm working mostly on my own and on a part-time volunteer basis.

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,
PT

i think it can be accomplished using directories-system extensions such as SOBI (free) or Mosets Tree (commercial)..

Thanks Brian, I'll check out those extensions.

Could anyone let me know if Joomla has newsletter subscription module?

I just need a simple textbox for visitors to enter their email address to subscribe/unsubscribe to newsletter, and a back-end to publish the newsletter to the subscribers.

Thanks.

Just in case you don't know this already - you can copy an article from one category to another. However, using a 'taxonomic' directory system (to associate the article with multiple classifications) is still probably the best way to go.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that.

If I were to copy an article to different categories, would updating the original article flow through to the rest of the categories?

No - I'm afraid not. At that point the article is a separate article.

So using a directories solution is probably your best bet.
