Friends,

I have started working on Joomla Marathi Language for 1.5.x - I do not promise a date but will surely try to complete it as early as possible. I have been using old version of this package and have modified it over the time whenever required.

It is good to see more people are interested in building Marathi websites using Joomla! I would love to help you guys; also the above download link (of my site) is not working and I have removed Joomla 1.0.x as I have also moved to Joomla 1.5.x (current version is 1.5.15)

Thanks!

For your information

The Joomla!® Translation Team Coordination is focusing on the core packages and does not recommend this system as an infrastructure for the core packages as there are a lot of technical and quality control issues.
Any one volunteering to coordinate and provide core packs, with the responsibilities attached to this volunteer task, please contact the Coordination.

Hello Infograph,

Thanks for the clarification..I understand.. However is it possible for someone to co ordinate between such resources & the core packs ?

As i got a lot of feedback that due to the nature of Transifex it was easier for people to contribute..

Probably a Model as below could work ?

1. General Volunteers Contribute translations on Transifex - No real relation to core packs
2. People maintaining the core packs ( I am willing to chip in for Marathi to start with) can use these resources generated via such crowd sourcing to create official packs .

I am willing to help co ordinate any such efforts if it helps..

Thanks !

@coolparth
2. People maintaining the core packs ( I am willing to chip in for Marathi to start with) can use these resources generated via such crowd sourcing to create official packs .
"People" maintaining core packs have first created them, are called Coordinators for their language, manage their own Teams, control the Translations as a Team and also via their language communities feedback.
They do not let anyone use Google Translate or make important grammar or misinterpretation errors because of the poor knowledge of the language itself or the wrong understanding of the context of the strings.
They make sure they use/add the right JPlurals when necessary, that there is consistency in the usage of phrases, wording.
At all time, they do control the quality of the packs.

"Crowd sourcing" as you call it is the basis for bad translations that would have to be corrected systematically by these Coordinators, thus increasing drastically the work necessary to create a working Core pack. Also, as anybody can do anything, some good stuff can be easily overwritten by anyone.
Not speaking of the necessary fast follow-up when new Joomla versions are released.

Generally speaking, for Core packs as well as for extensions, while at first sight it seems like an easy web based tool to create and maintain a translation and work together as a team, we have found a number of disadvantages in comparing with the systems we use as Translation Teams at this moment. Just to name some of them:
● Everyone can jump in and transform a good translation to a bad one, there is no approval process or anything.
● The coordinators for each language have no control on who is doing what, on which project.
● It's hard to test the translations live on a site, since that requires you to download one by one each file - and not a pack. Meaning everyone is doing blind translations over there.
(A simple example: Anyone who has been working with the variables %s in a string called by a JText::sprintf will understand that blind translations are not the way to go)
● One cannot add missing strings in a translation file and still has to contact the developer about it as most TT translators are already doing now
● A translation file gets locked for (+)24 hours, meaning one can not easily correct a typo, in comparison with collaboration via svn which is easy.
● Our new JText::plural needs some supplementary/different strings to be added/changed depending on languages. Transifex interface does not let do that.

Therefore, if some 3rd party developers are satisfied with this, it is their problem and alas has consequences on the users installing their extensions. They would better ask the registered Translation teams to help, as many have already be doing that job in their communities and gladly made their translations available to the 3pd developers.

Concerning Core packs, Joomla! project has to be more selective. We do not speak here of a few strings but thousands of them.

I hope this clarifies our position on this.

If you want to volunteer for Marathi Core packs, you are welcome, read the Translation policy and just start the work. But you are now aware of the issues with the transifex system.

Note: there are no "Official" packs, there are "Registered" packs.

Thanks so much for this in depth reply! Definitely brings up quite a few things i hadnt come up till now ! I will check if there are ways to get around it ( though for the JText::plural i am not sure what can be done)

Thanks again !

coolparth:

Collaboration is a good thing for translation exercise. However, it has to be in a controlled environment.

I have seen the kinds of infrastructure you are suggesting (e.g., Transifx) being used in other software houses (e.g., Tiny MCE). However, with these kinds of infrastructure, even though it may look promising, some of the challenges we may face in real life situation are:

(a) Consistency in translation
(b) Quality of translation
(c) Context sensitive translation
(d) Timeliness of translation

Having said that, thanks for volunteering to do the Marathi language pack.

If need be you could try the infrastructure you are suggesting to try it out in real time and find out its pros & cons. As the Free plan supports only 2,000 words, I suggest that you start with the installation strings as it contains 200 phrases.

If we get positive feedback from this exercise, we could try to test out the suitability to translate Site language files. There are 71 Site language files and there are a total of around 2,000 phrases to translate.

With these exercises we could evaluate the suitability of this tool and others (preferably Open Source ones) that are available.

Please let us know your thoughts.

@Ronak,

Thats awesome ! How about we start an un official translation for now .. using what resources we can.. & then maybe i can apply to maintain the pack once we have things together..
What say ?

@imanickam
Sounds like a good idea.. Will give it a try for the Marathi Transaltion.. I have some 5-6 volunteers who have little time but are enthusiastic who can chip in .. Lets c how it goes :)

Will keep you updates. @Ronak, will post the project link here

Thanks Parth.

Also, yes Translation manager does not support collaboration fully. Only one user can work on a file at a time! So that means you have 5 volunteers then at a time those 5 users can work on 5 different files!

isn't that easy?

@ronak,

True but then you need someone to co ordinate them & make sure things are happening. The one thing i liked about Tx is that you can setup files there .. people can come & contribute when they can.. Then the coordinator will just have to compile & check the resources & its got inbuilt tools to suggest & improve as well..

Sounds good theoretically ... BUT think about how it will look after a while when several people has translated a string each in same or different files, all using their own words ... that means same English words is translated with several different words in the said language.

That would look weird for the end-user, wouldn't it? How would that then make the company presenting the site look? What would you think of t.ex. a company or government site using different spelling and words within the same text/article, would you trust it ...?

This is something we're forced to see when everyone can jump in and translate or change a string or three when they want. No way a coordinator is able to proof read all. And at OT the coordinators are overruled by OT, witch accepts every single person who want to join in on a language team.

Hey Rune,

As i said.. We are still going to need a Quality control process .. what i am saying is that TX has a good way to get things done fast. Take my case for instance.. I needed a Language pack for a Marathi Joomla Site..

i couldnt find any for Joomla 1.7 .. there was a 1.5 one available.. but none for 1.7.. At that point i would have been happy to start with even a 60% translation as a starting point to be improved upon..

Ofcourse i would review the entire pack before i gave it to a client.. Whether i got it from the registered packs or from one in the wild i would need to review it anyways from the Quality perspective cause the client is going to come after me if the Quality is bad :)

As i said my intention is to have a good base of ppl available who can contribute easily without any kind of entry barriers ( to basically make it easy to contribute) Finally as the co ordinator one can pick the best ( makes his job easy)

Anyways as @imanickam said .. lets c how it goes :)

Well, proof reading takes more time than translating properly from the ground up. Trust us, many of us has done this since around 2004. OT has not done much of it, and they're thinking more from devs side of the table - where a bad translations is considered better than no translation. But it's not, when the translation is so bad that it doesn't give any meaning in the translated language. This is something we've seen a lot of in others "contributions" already.

If there is a complete 1.5 pack, it could easily be migrated to 1.7 - and give you 40-60%. If this language has a translation coordinator already, they have the tool needed available. Better than starting from scratch in TX. ;)
Finally as the co ordinator one can pick the best ( makes his job easy)
That sounds easy, but it's not so easy in real life. It's not just picking, like in the fruit disk ...
