[UNCONFIRMED]Warning!- Failed to move file" during installation of com/mod/mambo

Post by reddevil4 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 2:39 pm

Hi all, i have encountered this problem with the system prompting me "Warning! - Failed to move file" when i tried installing new components/modules/mambots on Joomla 1.5? I have enabled the legacy mode but i still could not install the components/modules/mambots. Anybody know how can i solve this problem? Your help is greatly appreciated. =)

TEST w/ SVN: 9230
UNCONFIRMED

I was randomly grab a legacy component "com_zweatherb5_02.zip" for testing purpose.

w/o legacy plugins on, I got error message, which is correct
I turn on legacy plugins, I installed it successfully.

Could you try again with last night build or latest SVN?
If the issue still exist, could you provide your server/host environment information.
Also, which components/modules/mambots are you trying to install?

perhaps a duplicated post, http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,220933.0.html

Thanks,

I use the latest "nightly build"
and I got the following error when trying to install sobi2-component

--> can it be the same problem ?
(it worked fine with 1.5 RC2...)

-- It says that sobi2.xml does not exist, bu I can see it via ftp...
-- The path is correct otherwise it would come another error message named "Please enter a package directory"
-- You can see that the installation is started already because a menu-entry within the "joomla->admin->components" menu is already created... (but not working)
-- also an entry within "joomla -> admin -> extension-manager -> compontents" is created already

for Dirk 67 or anyone who has this problem:
Well, after a lot of tries, I installed sobi2 today.
My error was in the Extension Manager Install form, in the "Install from Directory" field I completed it with a relative path ("com_sobi2-RC2.8.6/") and it must be absolute like: /home/greenforgood/public_html/administrator/com_sobi2-RC2.8.6/

Not Mine...

I've read about three hundred posts here on the forum about this exact issue with no uniform results... Very dissapointing indeed. :(

In my case, I'm getting the "Warning! Failed to move file" error every time I try to use the installer to upload/install OR install from a directory.

I've set every folder from the root to the tmp to 777. I've triple-checked my path spelling. I've held my breath and crossed my eyes, too. Nada.

This is on a brand-spanking-new 1.5.4 build, on a subdomain.

It probably has something to do with the fact that I've never been able to get the ftp layer enabled either. Joomla can't auto-find the path for it to my root and the path that my hosting support staff pointed to doesn't work.

So since I'm on linux, I decided to just use FTP, the old fashioned way.

...So much for that... Now this problem is stopping me from installing - ANYTHING AT ALL- to joomla.

What a shoddy program! -I'm about to erase it completely and install v1.0....

Does the temp directory in the configuration.php exist, and is it writable?

Hi ircMaxwell! Thanks for helping...

Yes, the exact tmp file exists that my config file points to and it is cdmodded to 777... As is just about every other folder on the server today. :p

I've tried installing comonents every possible way now, I usually get this error when it tries to create the component directory:
* JFolder::create: Could not create directory
* Component Install: Failed to create directory.: "/var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/subdomains/dev/httpdocs/members/administrator/components/com_comprofiler"
Using the Path installer, when I hold my mouth just right, I can now get a mod to install... Just not the uploader nor URL installer, and certianly not when installing a component.

This solved my install problems and I could make adSence module to work.
In configuration.php file:
var $tmp_path = '/tmp';

No luck for me. This is like the merry-go-round grief I have with Joomla 1.5. I don't know what else to change. All my directories are writeable. I've done the configuration.php change for tmp and logs folder. Nothing. I still can't install components by uploading zips using the form. :(

For me it was an ownership problem. The directory was owned by root instead of wwwrun.

Had the same problem and of course it's an ownership-problem. Joomla was installed as root. ftp-user not was not root...etc..

But a temporary solution was to make the directory writable for all. And to make it non-writable after the installation.

But the solution to the whole mess is either change ownership to Joomla root or change the ftp-login.

I also have the same problem. Can anyone tell me how i change ownership to Joomla root or change the ftp login? I´m not exactly sure what the meaning of this all is.

I´m pretty new to all of this, i carefully read all the above advice but none seem to work for me so far. I believe what psy is saying above is correct for me, just have no clue how to get this done!

Thanks

Go to configuration.php, and set:

var $log_path = '/logs';
var $tmp_path = '/tmp';

If you try to install a module go to change the modules folder chmod to 777.

Install the modules. Change the permissions back to 755.

I did everything, setting the tmp & log path, changing mode to 777 to tmp, logs, modules directory. But still i can install.

Any other way?

What are the permissions set on configuration.php? Is safe mode on in your hosting?

Hi in the worse case that setting up tmp, logs, components and modules to 777 and nothing happened, try to go to the

Administrator/components
Administrator/modules

If after setting all this to writable nothing happened then perhaps you have to look at your configuration.php

I had the same problem but changed my temp url to /temp and changed the folder permissions to 777 and I managed to upload modules and extensions with no problems.

If my site goes down then I guess I did something wrong though lol

User Permissions The issue of this topic seems to be (user permissions).
All joomla components, modules, plugins, and templates require access to certain directories.
In cases of manual joomla installations on websites, directories through this type of installation are given correct permissions by default, however your current login to the server is not recognizing you as the owner. Therefore your permissions to certain directories maybe limited.
{Example Error}
* It was not possible to copy the selected file.
* JInstaller::install: Failed to copy file: http://www.domain.com/joomla/tmp/administrator/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_jce.ini to http://www.domain.com/joomla/administrator/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_jce.ini

Note that Joomla is trying to copy/move the underlined file to the following underlined directory

:laugh: --A Simple Solution-- :D
In most instances we would resort to changing permissions of the current directory that the joomla installer is having problems with to [chmod] (777)

There are security issues involved with this process.
After successful installation of component/module/plugin or template, reset the permissions on directories you have changed to their default settings.

Hope this helps everyone!

For each directory following the forward slash / you must chmod all these directories to 777.
Remember to return these settings to the default chmod settings before you changed them after successful installation of your component.

if you are still encountering errors, you also need to chmod each file it is trying to access to 777 also.
If you are just chmoding the directory to 777 than this may not always work, as it maybe a file inside that directory that joomla is trying to access. Therefore you would need to chmod all folders including files in the area that the installation is trying to access.

I was able to resolve by updating the directory permissions on the server. I use ubuntu on greenqloud servers. I followed the steps on "Configuring Access Rights" from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Joomla
Basically cut and paste and it does the work for you with a few errors saying some of the folders did not exist. I was then able to install templates via Joomla with no issues.
