Some versions of PHP have bugs which prevent Joomla! 1.5 to function properly. Please make sure to use other versions than those mentioned in the postings below.


There is an important bug in PHP 4.4.2 that makes PHP crash when the
system tries to open an URL using the fopen streams functions. A more
detailed description of this bug can be found here :

How does this affect Joomla! ?

For 1.0 the problems are small

- Newsfeeds will not work
- Any other third party functions that are using fopen, fclose, fread,
file_get_contents etc with a  remote file will not work

For 1.5 the problems are more severe

- The whole FTP layer will stop working
- Newsfeeds will not work
- Helpsites fetching will not work

There are no workarounds for this problem, besides installing PHP 4.4.1
or waiting until 4.4.3 comes out.

We just found out this morning that bugs in 5.0.4 prevent some functions from acting properly in J! 1.5

Example: display Newsfeeds in Frontend.

Problem is solved with 5.1.4

I have been unsuccessful in getting newsfeeds to work under PHP 5.2.0 in a minimalist installation:

Click on the Kiwanis news feed button in main menu - wait a while and you will get the error.

It displays now. I get indeed a Error: feed not retrieved.
