phpbb component - problem with magic quotes

I recently upgraded my server to
Apache 2.0.54
php 5.0.4
zend 2.0.4 with ioncube 3.1.4

Since then I am getting Magic Quotes problems, in each of my posts ' will be replaced with /' " with /" and so on.

php.ini has magic quotes disabled

On my old build I could add php_flag magic_quotes_gpc Off and it worked.

Not so much on this one.

Any help or pointers will be appreciated.

A plain phpBB install runs fine on the same machine so it must be some combination of joomla 1.0.5 and phpbb_component (RC6)
