The problem

• Access an article from the menu, URL generated: */alias.html
• Access the same article from a category blog page, using the read more link, URL generated: ***/itemid-alias.html

What are the downside: Navigation totally broken
Menu items are not activated when it should--> usability issue. That's extremly annoying. e.g: sublevels menu items will not appear if the page has been accessed from the Read More link, as the url is different


The problem is independent of SEF being On/Off

This is not an issue. You are creating two ways to access an article, once through direct linking to it from a menu item and once by linking to the category the item is in. This is completely intended behaviour. Also, the number you see before the article alias is the id of the article, not the itemid.
