Since this listing for FREE / Open Source template sources and downloads, you may want to provide a list of links to commercial / paid sources as well. It doesn't seem fair to favor one over the other.

Well being a noob I'd agree.  However I would also have reservations.

I'm sure the experienced Joomla admin may know of some great sites, but on the other hand the probably do their own creations or modifications to basic free templates as I wouldn't think too many experienced admins would purchase templates.

A noob such as myself could / would go to these links and find some templates we think are cool, but perhaps the coding of them is not really quite up to par for current standards.  I've seen many that the designs are a year or more old, yet from what I've read there are MANY changes and updated methods for templates that have been made in just the past couple months or so.

http://www.rockettheme.com/ certainly has some nice looking ones and their descriptions make them sound great but they sell as a membership which maybe designers may want, but not sure how well it applies to noobs with single sites.

That being said, I too would appreciate some links to a few of the better known / approved / experienced sites for templates.

A source for templates is also http://news.joomla.org. Both free and commercial templates can be selected as a category on the left menu.

The template being used by the Joomla.org sites is not for public use.

That seems odd.

We want to keep the template to have a sort of a unique outlook to the Joomla! websites, hence the template is not release to the public. It's also four Joomla! sites that are linked to each other.

Perhaps I should have made it a little more clear. According to the Site License Guidelines...

FOLLOW-UP: The Joomla template(s) were designed by RocketTheme - http://RocketTheme.com.

However, some other sources for templates can be found at :
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,68962.0.html
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,25306.0.html

There are many, many resources throughout the community, all you have to do is search.

Happy hunting.

May I remove my cap, bow my head most humbly, and suggest that http://www.joomlatemplatesearcher.com should most definitely be included in this list?

Hey guys,
This is a good list, but I would like to propose adding two more sites with quality templates for Joomla:

http://www.osskins.com/main - free template repository with rating system, comments, live demos (where available), large screenshots, etc.

MOD NOTE: Link removed, self-promotion. - UNIXBOYMD

Need help overwhelmed!  My use of Joomla isn't initially going to take advantage of the full power.  I'd like something simple as a template  like just a place to put a "hello welcome to my site" and a few links to my blog and my gallery area.  I found this template Nova at http://www.joomlashack.com/joomla-servi ... templates/ which is VERY simple and I like something like that, but my coworker uses that template and I'd like to have my site a tad different :)  Can anyone suggest some templates like that? Very simple and just a springboard to other areas  of my domain rather than a full blown content management system... I'm sure someday I will get more into all the power of Joomla but for now that's what I'm after.  Thanks!

May I add one? I think it's German or Dutch, and they're free.

Ugh.  Please tell me I missed it...

I cannot find a basic, truly free, well-commented starter template.

Shouldn't there be a very basic template that is well commented and hosted right on the forge? Maybe in the Extensions section. A template that gets improved by the community? I'm going to try to build one myself from scratch, but it is hard with not a single example to be found.  And if I use a copyrighted example, someone will accuse me of stealing.

I'm not smart enough to host it on my site and defend myself from hackers and such... please host a blank template somewhere on the forge.

I know, once someone figures out how to build templates, selling them is a logical step.  And it takes bandwidth to give them away.  But I think if there were a basic, 3 column template out there, and a place for people to upload their mods, we'd have a great place for people to start.

Did I miss it?  Whenever someone responds, to a "where are the free templates? query" he/she gives a dozen links to teaser free templates on commercial sites.  VERY FRUSTRATING!  And I don't want to credit someone else on my template... I'm not asking for fancy graphics.

Again -- free, no attribution required, and well-commented.  Sasquatch?

Joomla.org hosts a tutorial that looks like exactly the ticket- till you get to the end and see that the link to the sample is dead and you have to register at the compass site.  *sigh*  I can't tell if the church ministries examples are no rights reserved, but I appreciate his  :'( :(work... it helped me start to understand templates.

Twout

Great new tutorial from Rockettheme.  Well commented.  Supplies the editable graphics and all the template files.  New tutorials will be coming.
