hey,

I sorta had the same problem. If you install joomla from scratch on a new site, using the prefered method, uploading fresh files and going to yoursite.com/installation and do the preinstall check etc then it will create a new database, if you try to import an old database it won't work. What i did was i deleted the database that joomla made in phpmyadmin completely and then imported my old database. You could try that.

Well, the thing is that I would like to get a local copy of my online site, both the files and the database...

I don't understand what's going on!!  :'(

Has anyone here had the same issue? that is, when creating a local copy of another site, changing the config but only getting the frontpage content displayed (nothing else)?

This is driving me nuts...

thx ;)

Uh just out of curiosity why would you want a local copy of your entire site? YOu should already have one. Incase you haven't noticed joomla is PHP and if you don't have a local php server running on your computer it ain't gonna work. Look into wamp server or JSAS (joomla server). Its quite easy to actually do what your looking to do, but first answer us this, do you have a local server running? (virtual) ?

Ok, while developing my site, I was doing already testing on a local copy. But the content was fake. I used the local copy to mess around and test new modules/templates/etc.  and when something was working on the local site, I would then upload it to the online one.

But now I would like to synchronize both sites, because the local one is a total mess (lots of useless modules/components/etc.) and the content is whatever.

So, I simply got rid of the local site, which was useless anyway. I would now like to start from a clean version which mirrors (at least at the beginning) the online site.

And I can't get it work.... :(

Start with a fresh install of joomla! on the local server/hard drive. From absolute scratch. Then download the templates folder/components/modules and administrator folder and you should be good to go. I am not sure what joomla does in terms of a database on your local server you, will have to consult w/e server you are using and figure out what folder database table entires are stored in.

Hi!

I have already done that, so I could at least work my the templates.

However, because the local database is fresh, there is no content/user or component/module installed (some components have their own tables in the DB).

I am stuck here.  :-\

If you know where the dbase is on the local server remove it then replace with an SQL copy from the server.

This is what I did in the first place. Then, the admin backend works fine, I can see all the content/modules/users/components/etc, but when I launch the frontend, I only get a white page with the frontpage's content and no style/template whatsoever. Indeed, if I look in the page source, it starts with the contentpaneopen tag.

If I revert the database to a new fresh install database, but using the copy of my online files, the frontend works well.

So, I guess there is something in the database that is wrong and that needs to be configured.... no just in the configuration.php file...

what do you think?

I am struggling to export/import my Joomla db using phpmyadmin. I am using godaddy as a provider and I am not sure if there are some settings that make it impossible for me to set a "new user" as the direction in the forum post instructed.

I get the message:

MySQL said: Documentation
#1044 - Access denied for user: 'cessd%' to database 'cddss'

It seems as though the user does not have access? Does anyone have any experience doing this using the cpanel of godaddy. Any assistance is appreciated.

Regards,

Andy

Answering My own question. Was a difference in syntax between newer MySQL version and older version. 3.23.58

I replaced all instances of "ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1" with "TYPE=MyISAM " and it imported ok

I have read & reread & I still don't get it :-(

My setup is: mydomain.com/joomla
I want it to be: mydomain.com (same server, host etc)

So I think I need to:
1. change $mosConfig_live_site = 'blah://my domain.com/joomla';  -TO- $mosConfig_live_site = 'blah://mydomain.com';
2. delete GoDaddy's welcome.html (the default index page)

I think I got that much. But then I get stuck. Do I need to move any of the Joomla files to the "root" - ok it's not really the root in GoDaddy - but to the same directory as the welcome.html? If not, I don't see how the links will still work.

Y'all have been so good at helping others, & I'm just not getting it & I'm scared to death to make a huge mistake. Please help .. and thank you!

Simple, just move all of your files from one place to another.

IE, everything under public_html/joomla to public_html/

Make sure there is not index.html file or your Joomla index.php will not show. I'm assuming where your welcome.html file is is the directory you want to move joomla to.

I have done as described but I am having problems when I use phpmyadmin to load the dump.

The problem is that the dump contains "DROP DATABASE" and I am not allowed to drop the database as I get the following message:
Database running on localhost
Error

MySQL said:

"DROP DATABASE" statements are disabled.

Is there a way to dump the database so that it doesn't included the "DROP DATABASE" statement?

The database is running at a webhotel and I can not get permission to drop the database.

Thanks,
Thor.

Open your database's SQL file and remove the drop database reference  notepad does work for this

make sure database names are same

drop the db from "MySQL Account Maintenance" in the cpanel not from phpmyadmin, that should do the trick ;)
your host doesnt have full persmissions given to phpmyadmin thats why. ;)

aside from what you already resolved.. look for this in your configuration.php:

$mosConfig_absolute_path = '/this_is_your_aboslute_path_supposedly/blah/blah'; --> change it to the absolute location where your root is(no trailing slash at the end).
to find out what is the absolute path where your location is(since it varies from server to server,.. the sample given is the most common.) to aid you with it.. i have attached a file in this post..

1. unzip it
2. upload it via ftp to where you believe is the root
3. open your browser and pull that file like: http://www.yourdomain.com/info.php

right on the first line i made it to show the absolute path where it is located in your host.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

look in the root and see any files ending in .html .htm if there is one try renaming them to something else. like lets say if you say index.htm change it to index._htm

can you access admin page in yoursite.com/administrator/    ?

as a total newbie, I'm thinking that this is a database or username pass, correct?

I seem to have entered the info correctly into configuration.php, but still, this error...

i'm having exactly the same problem:

Any Ideas of what this could be??? Keep in mind that im attempting to transfer my local J install to my server

this was the posters solution,.. you might have encountered that same error due to the limit of db name chracter:

noirize wrote:
Okay it's fixed!

This may be useful to know if you are having a #2 Error and you've already gone through the process of editing your configuration.php files, etc.  Don't let it happen to you!

Being a total newbie, I had carefully followed the excellent advice presented herin on migrating a Joomla site - yet - after editing everything to what I thought was the correct values - no luck.  :(

The problem was :  The number of characters allowed in my database username was limited - but my configuration.php did not reflect that.

Or in other words, when setting up the new database on my new server, I had entered a username that was ELEVEN characters. (mambodata10)

But...even though the MySql interface in Cpanel allowed me to enter that 11 character name without error - it saved my username with SEVEN characters.  (mamboda)

I never caught this , so my Joomla configuration.php file had the wrong username (mambodata10).  Only by going back to MySql and viewing the usernames one more time, did I catch the error.

Yep, this is a total newbie error...but we're all newbies once.  Don't let it get ya.

Thanks to Guilliam and everyone contributing to this thread.

ok this is probably something silly on my behalf but when I import my old dab i get this message

#1044 - Access denied for user 'BLAH'@'localhost' to database BLAH_db'

htaccess? config file??

Does the username and password have to be the same as on the old site? And when you create a new user with all privilages does that username have to be the same as the old site? My new site adds a shorter version of my domain name to the database and user i created. like i called the db "site" but it ends up as "domainname_site" and the with the new user I called "admin" gets called "domain_admin".

Looks like the Mysql credentials you entered doesn't have the rights to perform the operations needed. Can you login with these credentials in Phpmyadmin?

What about the article images from the old site?  How do I migrate those to the new site since they are not in the mysql database?  Just copy over the images/stories directories?

And, are there other datatypes that are not in mysql that need to be migrated to a new hoster?

Thanks!

How are you migrating? If you copy over all files and the database to a new host, you will have all information.

Probably due to these:

name varchar(30) NOT NULL default '',
title varchar(40) NOT NULL default '',

What happens if you remove the default ='' from these lines, save the file and try again?
