Just curious...

I'm proficient at GooglePages but looking for something for my own domain and willing to spend a few hours learning something, well, real.  However, I'm hesitating even going down the Joomla path (although I've seen an excellent Joomla site which lead me here) because this entire process seems so disjointed.  The beginners guide doesn't even appear to start at the 'beginning.'

I'm installing php, but don't know which modules need to be added, etc..

It's looking like it's pretty easy to get all botched up here very quickly.  Is there truly a newbie path I should be taking here considering I've never used a program to develop a website before?  I've fooled around with Frontpage a bit but wasn't impressed.

Is Joomla too advanced and complex for somebody coming from my background?

Thanks for any feedback/direction...

Most people do not have to go through the set up of a network server, or don't wish to do so, that is why it is not included.  There are ready made installable network server programs that you can use such as XAMPP or WAMP for windows or MAMP for Mac, that you use on your local computer.  Otherwise people use a hosting service where all the requirements for Joomla! are already installed.

If you wish to know how to create a network server there are a number of forums out on the web that contain this information.  Unfortunately it is outside of the scope for this forum, and is a very specialized topic of discussion.

XAMPP - http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
WAMP - http://www.wampserver.com/en/
MAMP - http://www.mamp.info/en/index.php

This is the best manual I have seen. With this great intro, everything makes more sense and it will be easier to learn the more complex stuff!!
