There's not any current plans for this, however, I would recommend posting on the dev-general list to see if the PLT has any interest in a structure for Platform Apps. It's something that could definitely be discussed.

I think this sounds like a great idea. Matt, why not pull a string and ask a few PLT members in proxy so we can get this done faster. I have a few on my skype list I could ask but I think it would come better from a CLT member or maybe whoever is in charge of the JED. I have seen to many times that question like this get posted to the mailing list and they get sent back here. IMO I think this is the best place for the leadership to consider the new categories.

We should support the Platform as much as we support the CMS. I would assume that creating a new category would help the project and inspire developers to create new Joomla Platform Apps.

Matt, this isn't a PLT response (because I'm not on it, but I am a Platform Maintainer), but you could start with a "Platform Applications" umbrella category. However, the meta data for a platform app is going to be a bit different, not least of which would be the size of the download. That said, I don't think they fit into the JED at all so we may need to look at another solution.

i'm not fully agree, may depend on what kind of application we are talking about,
for example, i'm playing with CLI side but i'm strictly related to the Joomla CMS so could be reasonable to put on JED, otherwise if we are talking of WEB/CLI apps totally independent and not related to CMS probably as you say another solution could be preferable

A CLI application is not an extension. People would download it and try to install it - trust me :)

@Andrew maybe you could give us some ideas you have in your brain and we can expand upon them.

I started a globally shared sheet and built some framework.

Do not edit this doc unless you know what your doing. We suggest to use the comments area to ask questions before you get approval to edit.

forgive me andrew but i don't have your full knoweledge on platform, i'm only able to think at cli app like a joomla cms "extension", better another category of extension, so i want users be able to install it ,despite for run they have to manage crontab or terminal or something similar.
in my mind cli app should help doing long and repetitive task to help joomlawebmasters, ie backup, virus check and so on. Consider that not all users are so skilled to put on proper folder cli app etc, etc.

p.s.
Please when you have time open our minds to discover the new world of platform app.
