Has JED Gone Dead Again?

Post by herb200mph » Mon Jan 25, 2016 8:17 pm

It's looking like the JED has gone to sleep again. Nothing showing as new or updated for a long time - same issue as before methinks.

Can anyone kick the tires to see if the thing still runs?

Yes, it looks like it's died again. Here's the current issues list on Atlassian

https://monosnap.com/file/atPxgTpFr75IV ... u44XdAFaNH

As far as I can see, nothing's changed since 29th of December, a full month ago.

Thanks for the update. Sad testimony to overall Joomla! given all the discussions as of late on the developers site with regard to the "G" company; and now the J!4 discussions. And, among all that, the quest to be the #1 Open Source CMS.

The "Donald" would say: Joomla! got nothing anymore.

Can the JED really stay in stasis this long without anyone taking the bull by the horns and motivating someone to get it fixed so that it posts the "new extensions" when then are posted, or approved, or granted a display - or whatever is done.

This seems to be a chronic issue that has persisted since the JED went over to this new - somewhat unpopular - format and layout.

Is there a programming team that supports the JED or is it subbed out to a contractor who gets paid to work on it, or what?

This is getting frustrating as Joomla! versions keep updating, and we cannot find if there are new extensions being released in conjunction.

Anyone have a similar observation, and any JED team member (there are over 28) care to shed some light?

Thanks JazParkyn, but neither of those two explain why the JED is simply "D-E-A-D" as a doornail. There are 28 people on the JED team and not a one of them has come here to the forum to tell us why there is total inactivity with regard to posting of extensions.

It is hard to believe that months go buy without anyone submitted an extension for the JED, or posting an update - especially after Joomla! version upgrades.

The entire JED team should be personally embarrassed about the situation and make all speed to get the JED "new" page back into proper operation.

Seems that someone heard your call, because the "new extensions" link was updated and now there are new extensions displayed (not only for 24th dec), but only 2 new extensions were published yesterday (today NULL). That's not much for 1 listing manager, 2 listing specialists and a handful of volunteers for listings.
Sporadic publishing should be replaced by continuous publishing

Noticed that also. There were a good number of "new" JED listings. Let's see how long it stays in the updating mode. One fear that we have is that no one is processing the JED submissions, but with such a large team, hardly seems possible that would be the case. Now then, a glitch in the code - that we can see, but what was fixed before, broke again, and now might be fixed. Let's hope for a long term fix has been performed.

Over and out on this forum.

I guess we rejoiced too soon. Since they refreshed the "new extensions" page, there are no new extensions published (till now 5 days without any new extensions).
The system says, if you submit an extension
Listing Submission Received

Your submission has been successfully received.

Within the next 60 minutes your listing will be automatically screened. If it passes all of our requirements it will be published. If it does not pass the initial screening you will receive a notice outlining the errors found and the next steps to take. If you checked the field "My extension includes external libraries" it will be manually screened in the order it was received by a team member.

Automatic approvals will be manually spot checked. If we find any issues during those checks your listing may be unpublished until the issues are resolved.

Note: Extensions that require a manual screening may take up to 14 business days to process.
60 minutes!
I have 3 pending extensions now and one of them is waiting 10080 minutes for publishing.

All the issues started shortly after the re-design, which assumes, re-coding, the JED, and given there are 25+ JED Team Members, each one of them should be red-faced about their product because of the many issues we repeatedly complain about.

Dark red! The new com_jed is more than 1 year alive and it is still buggy. They tell us developers to pass our extensions first through the jed-checker and they won't publish our extensions if there is a peanut, but their own main component is a spontaneous abortion. Sorry for my words

10-4. Understand that also. Joomla! has significantly gotten "elite" since OSM took over everything. Unless you are standing inside of the circle, or pass their "admissions test," you can forget affecting anything.

Progress today. There were actually "new" extensions showing up this morning. Maybe... perhaps maybe ... it is now functioning correctly again.

Here's an interesting excerpt of an email from one of the developer groups, relating to an inline editor that was being worked on, which tells the whole story of the JED's issues, as follows:

On Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 6:14:47 PM UTC+1, Jean-Marc Bouillé wrote:
...and we published it yesterday in the Jed.
--
Just curious - The JED says "Last updated: Feb 12 2016, Date added:May 07 2015." Did you submit it to the JED in May already and it took the JED team 9 months to publish it?
--
And these are the Joomla! developers and the big bright light didn't go on until just now that the JED is, or was, a train wreck.

Although, it has been publishing the last several days as it should.

@herb200mph
The "Just curious..." question was asked by me. However, the question has not yet been answered, so we don't know whether or not my assumption is true.

Posted that link in another thread already, but did you read this?
https://volunteer.joomla.org/reports/17 ... nuary-2016
From what I understand, the primary reason for unsolved issues was "...waiting on contract approvals and signatures most of 2015".

Perhaps the JED team will provide some more details about what is going after their next report scheduled for 26th February 2016.

(Google doesn't index Glip discussions, so 'outsiders' like us have to wait for public announcements :-)

Contracts for a volunteer-run project? What kind of contracts are needed for the JED? You mean OSM hire contractors to maintain the JED? Really? Unbelievable!!!

That happens, if you try to entrust contractors with reinventing the wheel

Maybe you're unaware of the contracted work that went into the JED upgrade? http://community.joomla.org/blogs/leade ... posal.html and http://community.joomla.org/blogs/leade ... gress.html cover that.

Why do I have this feeling that the JED is gone kaput again? Nothing "new" in about a week now - or am I just being paranoid about prior, continuing, failures to publish new or updated extensions. Anybody feeling the same?

Ticket system also. I am waiting for a reply 21 days now.
No responsible person of the extension directory take a stand for all these issues.
I guess they don't want to descend to the base [* spam *] roots, because there are many many unanswered questions in this forum. They lost the relation to the base and if you want to contact some of them, you are told to register on 20 other platforms.
So for what is this "support" forum still existing?

Truth be told, JED being dead/unresponsive/unuseful/whatever-you-want-to-call-it is perfectly fine by me. It's not an accredited directory. It's not a point of truth. All the requirements for listing in it are completely arbitrary and only serve a purpose to enforce someone's ideals and beliefs, whether they be an individual's or those of a collective group. There is no real review system in place for extensions to be listed; if you can pass an automated check (which roughly equates to "your extension is GPL and has defined or die checks in place", not 100% inclusive of all requirements but a statement to show how simple the requirements checks are), you can get in. So here's the tough question to answer. What value does the JED actually bring to the Joomla community when you break it down like that? A single source to search extensions in versus having to search the wild wild Internet?

And no, this isn't me trolling the project as so many seem to think that's all I'm capable of doing these days. That is a legitimate opinion, unpopular or otherwise. Frankly I don't see the JED bringing anything of major value to the Joomla community, in its current form or when I first got extensions listed there 5 years ago. Not to say that it can't, but it just isn't right now.

Hear, Hear! It never seems like it was anything more than a robot process anyway because with that many people "holding a title as a JED Team Member, etc.," it would be a stretch to make us believe that anyone was paying attention.

If I were on the "JED Team," I'd be livid right about now and jumping on here to defend whatever flawed-as-heck system there is to defend. But the sheer silence, says volumes in and of itself.

As the "Donald" would say: "They got nothing. Lightweights. Low energy."
