Hi all,

well, I have already sent some note about this to the team@ email address with no response, so I will try here, how can we make our website list non GPL extensions and take every possible step to promote them without violating the JED rules if we will list only 1 GPL extension at the JED ? we have about 5 extensions/extension specific plugins to sell as non GPL and only extension as GPL which we want to list, can anybody answer this question for me please ? I have been told that this is ok and I could find some example websites working in the same manner.

TIA,
Max

I don't think the JED minds if you have non-GPL extensions listed on the site where your GPL one exist. At least that's the way I am reading this:
http://community.joomla.org/blogs/leadership/636-jed-to-be-gpl-only-by-july-2009.html
Quote:
This policy refers only to those extensions listed in the JED. Your GPL extensions are permitted to be listed on the JED but your non-GPL extensions are not.

You just can't have any listing on the JED for your non-GPL extensions.

If I am mistaken, I would also like to know.

There are a lot of other sites popping up to list extensions now as well (including my own). Most of these sites will list non-GPL as well as GPL extensions. I would suggest submitting your stuff there as well.

Hi, Thanks for your response, yes, all this is logical, but even though this fact exists, I have been asked by a JED editor to remove a web ad banner at my website and remove some of my non GPL licensing terms in order to get my GPL extension to get listed on the JED, that's why I'm asking for some clear guidelines here..

Yes I know about this, this has been started about 6 months ago when the GPL forcing rule was announced, I know about at least 4 of them!

As of right now, a very general answer would be yes. However, we look at these on a case by case basis.

Hi Geoff

So "Yes, non-GPL extensions can be on the same website as GPL extensions, and the GPL extensions can be listed in JED."

Or "Yes, a website with non-GPL extensions can not list GPL extensions in the JED."

Thanks for your fast reply
Regards
David

Yes, at this time, under certain circumstances "non-GPL extensions can be on the same website as GPL extensions, and the GPL extensions can be listed in JED." Most of the time it isn't an issue, but this is why we look at these case by case.

If your site doesn't need to be registered with OSM then I guess you have no problem listing your extensions, but if you're registered with OSM then according to the email I got from them last, you can't sell GPL and non GPL:

Unfortunately we cannot approve your logo use request because there are issues where your usage does not complying with the brand manual and usage guidelines. Specifically:

The extensions you distribute must all be GPL

Please make sure that you review the Joomla! Brand Manual carefully prior to producing print or other works incorporating the logo. If the circumstances of your <logo, name, jug> use change from those described in your request, you need to provide us with updated information before proceeding with use.

On your site, please make sure that the first prominent use of the name Joomla! has the trademark symbol (R in a circle) or (TM). Also, include the following statement in the footer of your site: "Joomla!(TM) is the trademark of Open Source Matters, Inc in the United States and other countries. The Joomla! name and variations on it utilizing shortforms for it such as J, Joo, Joom, etc, used on this site, is used under a limited license granted by Open Source Matters. (Your site name) is not affiliated with or endorsed by Open Source Matters or the Joomla! Project."

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Please feel free to resubmit your request, including all required information. At this time your (name, jug, logo) use request is not approved.

Thank you for your support of the Joomla! Project.

rgjoyce -

That's been the policy for quite a while. It seems fitting to me that if you want to use the community's trademark, you should comply with the community's license. Doesn't that seem fair?

Now, to be clear, you can charge for the distribution of your GPL extensions. That's acceptable.

Have a great day!
Amy

Why making your life so hard.
If osm and jed doesn't want you to have gpl and non-gpl extensions on one site, then make a site which is only gpl and add banners or advertisement which are linking to a site where you promote your non-gpl software.
If this is not ok for osm or jed then jed has to remove all google adds.
Many of these adds are linking to non-gpl software.
Not allowing something while one's self doing the same would be not politically correct.
