Joomla as Student Information System (SIS)

Post by jeffreytt » Thu Feb 07, 2008 3:41 pm

Sorry if this is posted somewhere and I couldn't find it, but are any schools using Joomla to create/maintain their student information systems? Any links to examples? I have an online real estate school and am looking to implement a new way to track our students information. I use Moodle to deliver the majority of my classes online and Joomla seemed like a possibility for integration. Is there a component created for Joomla already that I could purchase that is designed for schools? I've seen CRM extensions which I guess could be tweaked, but I haven't run across anything specific to a school SIS.

Thanks for any help/guidance you can provide.

Todd

Hi -

If you are looking for a student information system, you may want to take a look at Centre. It is open-source, php/postgresql. http://www.miller-group.net/index.php

Centre is not Joomla-based, though their business web site is running Joomla. :)

I have been an integrator of open source content management systems (mostly Drupal and Joomla) for K-12 schools for the past 5 years. Coincidently my company (http://www.schoolworksinc.com) also developed and sells a web-based student information system. Based on my experience, I would not recommend trying to use a CMS to fill in for a SIS. When we decided to go web-based, we completely disregarded our legacy client-server system and started from scratch with a new data architecture and code base. Even with 10+ years in the SIS business, it took us 2 man-years to code the new system! There are too many complex interdependent calculations and operations. For example GPA calculations and schedule creation, respectively.

Next consider the reports you'll want: address labels, student list, daily and period attendance reports, health records and health events, schedules, grade report cards, course masters....Reports alone are a huge undertaking.

For what it is worth, my advice is to get a great web content management system and a professional-grade web-based student information system. Save yourself some sincere headaches.
