configuration.php is: unwriteable; index.php is: unwriteable

Post by jorobogdanov » Sun Jan 12, 2014 10:08 am

Hi,

I have two issues that I don't know how to deal with. Both are very similar I want to make some changes in the administration panel, but when i go to the "template HTML editor" I get the message index.php is: unwriteable and I can not save the changes that I have made. The second issue is when go to the "global configuration" panel there I have the message configuration.php is: unwriteable and again I can not save any chages that I want to make.

I would appreciate any help.

That has to do with file permissions in your web server. Please use the Forum Post Assistant.

Are you still using J1.0? It went EOL many years ago. Consider an upgrade to a newer version.

Thanks for the reply.

The site is not actually mine I'm helping the owner with the SEO, the site is from 2008 and that's why is using such an old version of joomla. Can you explain me how to upgrade it?

Not a simple task. There where a migrator to 1.5. Then you have to migrate again to 2.5 or 3.x

See docs.joomla.org

This is how I did it and may work for you. The only requirement is you have access to cPanel (if hosted on cPanel):
Steps for cPanel only
1. Go to cPanel and then click the File Manager icon
2. On the left portion, click public_html.
3. Look for configuration.php or any file you'd like to update. Highlight by clicking it and click CHANGE PERMISSIONS icon on top. Tick all boxes to make it 777.
4. Refresh global configurations page and check if it's writeable.
5. Don't forget to turn it back to 444 otherwise you'll be vulnerable.
