I have read that I can llimit access to certain folders by listing acceptable IP addresses in .htaccess.

But what I would like to do is to limit access to my entire Joomla site to certain IP ranges. I have loaded Joomla into a folder, but I am unsure if I can limit access to the entire site in this way? Will it work?

If so, what are the commands I should use, and are there any wildcards I can use in defining the IP strings?

Any advise please?

Thanks Pe7er,

This gives me a really good technical explanation of how do this? But that just leaves the central questions of ....

Will joomla actually work if this is enabled?
Has anyone done this? and
Is this a good way to protect what is essentially a private extranet?

Probably, but you have to test it yourself.
I haven't used it myself.
Yes it's a good way to protect it, but you'd better use it in combination with new user registration=off, registered users & registered content.
