I  know this has been covered several times but I'm still unable to find a definitive answer. I'm trying to turn off register_globals and have tried the following:

Editing the .htaccess file and adding some code...
php_flag register_globals off

Creating a PHP.INI file in the Joomla root and chucking it in some other folders too:
register_globals off (suggested by hosting company)
register_globals=off

Also changed setting in globals.php from 1 to 0 to turn off but still doesn't work (just realised this is for global emulation, which worked!)! What else can I possibly do? Please don't tell me I need to reinstall Joomla and have the PHP.INI sorted before finishing the install, I will if i have too but I have a lot of sites. I can't use e-commerce while this setting stays on. Hosting company are looking at it for me too.  :-[

[Moderator edit; removed off topic info, please post in appropriate forums]

Anyway, back to the problem at hand, I need e-commerce to attract the investment so please tell me - how do I turn of register_globals!!!!! Please  ;)

Looking forward to a reply

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this resolution. I'm awaiting a reply from the hosting company. If they don't come through for me I'll have to apply the long winded manual solution. If anyone uses 1and1 hosting can they let me know if they have had the same problem?

Thanks in advance.  ;D

Hi,

Can we please stay civil? And mind the language? I'm going to edit all posts as they are all inappropriate.

Edit; at GJoomla, please post off topic issues in another forum, for example site showcase or professional services. At forager; no need to react like that, if you have no contribution to the topic itself, don't start such language!

Regards Robin

Thanks guys, I've got the hosting company on it and they say they are familiar with Joomla but I'm not so sure. I'll check out the links, thanks for your support.

Kind Regards,

David Gerrelli

P.S Previous post not reflective of my person, a lot of pressure to get the e-commerce components working. Thanks again.

Easy there glooma....may have reacted a bit strongly, but traversing these tails of woe got me a bit peeved reading through paragraphs w/o the problem :P

Plus I've been burned with 'Investment offers' before :( I helped out this nice Prince who was stuck and needed a  $20,000 check cashed until the dowry came through.

It's been awhile, but I'm still hopeful!

I'm sorry Forager, but getting the investment has not been easy and many late nights, getting the Global Settings turned off is key to securing the investment. I understand you may have had bad experiences but that is not reflective of all of us. I didn't acutally use foul lauguage, you just caught me at a bad time, again I apologise. I've spoken to the moderators and they have been very helpful.

Due to the inherent negitivity in many people, which I guess is understandable but not productive, I will rear the investment hat once I have the cash stacked in front of me...we're predicting March. If you want to support the development of Joomla, support the people supporting it!

I got the wrong impression of you but I am very serious, my new site will explain all. My hosting company still haven't turned off Register Globals but I havent had a chance to chase them as yet.

Word of advice, don't burn your bridges, you don't know whats behind this keyboard.  ;D I hope I didn't offend you.

LOL, I am probably the most offensive (for now) person on this board! :D I would be the last (and the least able ) to claim offence!

For your Register globals issue with 1and1, fat chance with getting anything useful out of their support :P

Hosting for $3/month means that 1 support call from you to them eats up all the revenue that you have paid for a month!
The only solution? cheaper cheaper support.
In the IT world, that means low quality [/rant]

anyway, you dont need PHP.ini for 1and1 hosting.

They have TWO configured PHP environments PHP4 and PHP5
The PHP5 environment is DEFAULTED to Register globals OFF

so all you have to do is switch to PHP5 as follows:
Quote:
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

add that line to the top of your .HTACCESS file
that will switch you over to the more secure PHP5 settings.

the PHP.INI switches work, but then you have to place PHP.ini files all over the darn place :)
This will work for you, I'm sure.

The Globals setting issue is not the only thing of course, if you are really anxious to secure yoursite (especially if you are concerned about 'haters trying to bring you down' then I can assure you 1AND1 is NOT the host for you. Their low cost mass price model DOES not work in your favor, I'll send you a PM.

For instance on the so called 'Professional plan' you are limited to 200 apache connections which can easily be overwhelmed.
I havent tried their dedicated (vs shared) package and have no inclination to really :(

You are best using 1and1 as a file server for your media files if you have a lot, and host your REAL site with someone else.
Best do it now before you REALLY get started!

check your PM for concrete reasons.
If you want to create a little blog

I have the same problem as GJoomla. My client is on 1and1, too.

WOW! The solution given by forager that switches to PHP5 worked of me, too!

Thanks

Hello all.. It seems as if some people are and some people are not having problems with 1and1 hosting.. I don't want to criticize the hosting company, but for whoever is not pleased, check out bluehost.com. They pretty much give you complete control over everything. Turning off globals were not a problem for me. It was just a click of a button. If bluehost is not for you, best of luck, and I hope everything works out well for everyone!  :pop
