While users of J! 1.5 are constantly updating their sites (up to J!1.5.14 already!) I think J!1.0.15 is still the way to go. How quickly many forget about the security troubles J!1.0 went through over the last few years trying to become secure and stable. Now that it is stable the support for it has been dropped. I think that is a terrible idea.

There should be a new website or section of Joomla.org that is manned by developers who still prefer J!1.0.15. New extensions should continue to be developed for it also. With millions of sites using it and developers who do not intend on migrating, it only makes sense.

Reminds me of when Microsoft tried to force Vista on everyone but XP is still the preferred system.

Just ranting! Thanks for listening.

Quite. And if Ford had only stayed with the Model T then we wouldn't have anywhere near the complexity of modern cars.

Times change. The Internet changes too. What was acceptable back then in 2003 when some of the code for 1.0 was first locked down (when it was Mambo) simply isn't valid now. This is 2009 and to service the needs of today's internet users you need an up-to-date tool platform. That is Joomla 1.5 and soon to be 1.6.

So many of the extensions for 1.0 series are so old and so open to security hacks that they are downright dangerous to use. Remember, Security by Obscurity doesn't work. Just because your tools are old and out-dated doesn't mean that the old exploits wont still work on them. To suggest that the regular updates to 1.5 has some bearing on keeping 1.0 alive is simply asking the Joomla community to support the upkeep of your personal Model T. Not going to happen.

If you want to keep using 1.0, and that is always your choice, you should only be making that choice by being fully aware that development and support have ceased and you are everyday more likely to get exploited without a chance of a patch or other work to fix the problem.

Hi

He didnt say that he wants to live and grow old with Model T. He said that he prefers to stick with Model T until the next model is save and stable. Many people still have stable production site running Joomla! 1.0.x. What is the one compelling reason for these people to upgrade ?

The "in the name of progress" argument holds only if real progress is made. Typically, it comes from people who like to play around and dont have 10+ running sites to maintain. Theyll get a taste of the kind of progress the OP is cheerfully ranting at when 1.6 comes along (in case they have a few running sites by then).

Cheers

adding images to a news production site with 1.5 is absolutely the slowest process ever!

in 1.0.15 I simply drag and drop from the image tab panel on the right - easy - not so in this so called better 1.5

now it looks like I have to slow down production to get a mambot/plugin - go from publishing 50 articles a day to 20

I cant wait to upgrade to this going to be great - NOT!
