New extensions should continue to be developed for it also. With millions of sites using it and developers who do not intend on migrating, it only makes sense.
Quite. And if Ford had only stayed with the Model T then we wouldn't have anywhere near the complexity of modern cars.
Times change. The Internet changes too. What was acceptable back then in 2003 when some of the code for 1.0 was first locked down (when it was Mambo) simply isn't valid now. This is 2009 and to service the needs of today's internet users you need an up-to-date tool platform. That is Joomla 1.5 and soon to be 1.6.
So many of the extensions for 1.0 series are so old and so open to security hacks that they are downright dangerous to use. Remember, Security by Obscurity doesn't work. Just because your tools are old and out-dated doesn't mean that the old exploits wont still work on them. To suggest that the regular updates to 1.5 has some bearing on keeping 1.0 alive is simply asking the Joomla community to support the upkeep of your personal Model T. Not going to happen.
If you want to keep using 1.0, and that is always your choice, you should only be making that choice by being fully aware that development and support have ceased and you are everyday more likely to get exploited without a chance of a patch or other work to fix the problem.
