LTS or STS

Post by Webdongle » Thu Oct 02, 2014 12:06 am

Joomla 3 is a stable release that will be supported long into the future
http://www.joomla.org/download.html
Suggests J3 is LTS
but
http://developer.joomla.org/security/59 ... usion.html
status.PNG
Also that page says
Solution

Upgrade to version 2.5.26, 3.2.6, or 3.3.5
Is J3 now being run as 3.2.x and 3.3.x series now ?

The current version is 3.3.6 and it is the one everybody is encouraged to use. 2.5.27 is the current one that is likely to "die" end of this year.

If you are thinking of starting a new project then go for 3.3.6. As you may know this will continue until it reaches 3.5.x after which there won't be any further development on 3.5.x series and work on 4.x.x will begin.

Thanks xfsgpr that was my understanding but the documentation appears to say otherwise.

According to http://developer.joomla.org/security/59 ... usion.html Joomla 3 is STS and appears to suggest Joomla 3 has 2 versions i.e. 3.2.x and 3.3.x

btw http://developer.joomla.org/security/59 ... usion.html is linked to from the page announcing 3.3.6 release http://www.joomla.org/announcements/rel ... eased.html

The documents section need a dedicated person or persons to keep them up to date. Do you want to volunteer? Volunteers are always required on open Source Products. By volunteering, you get "invited to "Get To Gather" meetings all over the world (except to places where there wars are a daily occurrence)

If you take a look at my posts you will see I have often volunteered but my efforts have not been welcomed by the present 'junta'. Besides which, only the developers know if Joomla 3.2.x and 3.3.x are running parallel.

On 28th April a request was made to test "Joomla 2.5.20 and 3.3 Release Candidates"
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/joomla- ... VbXX8-lfEJ
On 30th April 3.3.0 was released ... on the page that announced the release it recommends the 2.5.4 update package for servers running PHP versions 5.3.1 through 5.3.9. But to use 3.3.0 on servers running 5.3.10 or later.
http://www.joomla.org/announcements/rel ... eased.html

This suggests that J3.2.x and J3.3.x are being developed separately.

Addendum
J3.2.7 was also released on the 30th September at the same time as J3.3.6 was released.

I see what you mean. The Junta in my case are the moderators who are changing the links willy nilly and the Joomla users are not getting the help they need. To give an example, I posted a suggestion to use a particular extension but the Junta on these forums decided that it is not good enough so he/she decided to change the link and the link has nothing to do with the user's requirement or problem.

I have found the moderators on this board to be fair and helpful. They are human beings and make mistakes but on the whole they very good. If anyone on the forum has a genuine complaint ... the mods will look at it and make a fair decision.

When we raised the minimum supported PHP version for 3.3, we also announced that 3.2 would have six months of security support from that point. So until the end of October, any security issues that are addressed in 3.3 releases are backported to 3.2 and new releases of that branch are offered. I know that was publicized as I did a lot of writing around the 3.3 release and the raised PHP minimum.

As far as the LTS/STS issue, if you remember, in April we also announced a revised development strategy which changed some things, including the dropping of a x.5 LTS release. Unfortunately, those terms were used quite heavily for years and are still in use all over because there's a lot of documentation or web pages that need to be updated and there aren't necessarily good terms readily available to immediately replace them.
