Multiple Categories

First off, I'm a big Joomla fan and have been using it for most of my client projects. Usually if I don't use Joomla, it's because I'm building a small static site.

I'd really really really like to see Joomla have to ability to assign multiple categories. I've had this problem with a few sites, especially periodical style sites. I've had to spend time building complicated work-arounds, which are inferior anyway. If I had to ability to assign an article to multiple categories, it would solve a LOT of problems. Many extensions allow a version of this, such as Virtuemart, where you can place a product in multiple product categories.

Why isn't the ability to assign multiple categories a feature in Joomla? Will this feature be available in the near future?
