v 1.5 Interface Changes

Post by AmyStephen » Thu May 31, 2007 1:14 am

It might be a good idea to add a sticky thread where we can start to identify all of the interface changes made from v 1.0.x. For example, the "read more" break and the "content global configuration" and "articles instead of content items" and the "template positions" question and "the legacy mambot". Even different system requirements and php.ini settings. That might help collect a list for "go live" that we can point to when questions arise.

Thanks for considering,
Amy :)

Good idea Amy, I'm sure that this will also be a great help for our documentation team. I know that Joe has a nice website where he has been keeping track of UI changes, maybe you could contact him and see if he is intersted in working on this ?

Post by AmyStephen » Thu May 31, 2007 5:45 pm

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, introductory text is separated from the main body of a content item (now called article) by use of two separate editor windows (see attached image #1).

In Joomla! v 1.5, there is now only one editor window that contains both the introductory text and the main article body (see attached image #2).

To use:
  • Enter the introductory text in the editor.
  • Click the "read more" button located immediately beneath editor.
  • A dotted line appears designating the break between the two sections.
  • Add the main article body beneath the dotted line.
To change the location of the "read more" split:
  • Simply delete the split using the delete key on your keyboard.
  • Position your cursor at the location of the desired split.
  • Click the "read more" button.
Note: the "read more" breaks created prior to v 1.5 continue to work exactly as the breaks worked in v 1.0.x. It only looks different in the editor but it still behaves the same way in the front end interface.

Article Global Configuration Options

Post by AmyStephen » Thu May 31, 2007 9:25 pm

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, the default site-wide configuration for content items is found within the Global Configuration section on the content tab (see attached image #1).

In Joomla! v 1.5, the default site-wide configuration for articles can be located on the Article Manager page after clicking the Preferences button (see attached image #2).

Comparison of System-wide Article Preferences of v 1.5 with Content Item Global Configuration of Previous Versions:

New preferences:
  • Show Unauthorized Links - Show (Yes) or do not show (No) links to articles to anonymous visitors when the article is configured to only be accessible to known users who are logged on.
  • Show Article Title - configuration to Show or Hide Article Titles unless override at the menu item or article level.
  • Show Intro Text - configuration option now available at the site-wide level to Show or Hide introductory text for articles after the "Read more..." link has been clicked.
  • Section Name - This and the next three options relate to whether or not the article's Section and/or Category Name should be presented and if that name should be linked on the article page. This value can be overridden at the menu item and article level. The options were available prior to v 1.5 but only at the article level.
  • Section Name Linkable
  • Category Name
  • Category Name Linkable
Same:
  • Linked Titles
  • Author Names
  • Created Date and Time
  • Modified Date and Time
  • Show Navigation (was called Content Item navigation)
  • Read More Link
  • Item Rating/Voting
  • Icons
  • PDF Icon
  • Print Icon
  • Email Icon
  • Hits
Removed:
  • Table of Contents on multi-page items
  • Back Button

Articles instead of Content Items

Post by AmyStephen » Thu May 31, 2007 9:37 pm

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, the lowest level of the content hierarchy was called the content item (see attached image #1).

In Joomla! v 1.5, the content item is now called an article (see attached image #2).

You will notice the use of the word "Article" in menus and on buttons and in configuration options everywhere content item had been used previously.

Enabling Legacy Mode (From Masterchief)

Post by AmyStephen » Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:33 am

Directly copied from masterchief's post

Legacy mode is used when you want to install extensions written for version 1.0 until the authors have been able to rewrite them for the 1.5 framework.  Please report any incompatibilities you find in this sub-forum.

Legacy Mode is a plugin.

Select "Extensions -> Plugin Manager" from the menu.

Select "System" from the "- Select Type -" drop down.

Click the publish icon for the " System - Legacy".

A tell-tale will display in the template status bar when Legacy Mode is on (see attached screenshot).

Checkout Lock on Items Releases on Session Expiration

Post by AmyStephen » Fri Jun 01, 2007 1:47 am

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, the Global Check-in feature was required to reset the check-out flag for content items opened for edit, but not canceled or saved.

In Joomla! v 1.5, locks are automatically released when the user's session expires. Also, the item does not appear "locked out" for the user who checked it out for edit. It only appears locked to other users.

The article lock is released when a) the user saves the article; b) the user cancels the updates; c) the user's session times out; d) or, the global check-in feature is invoked.

The session automatically times out after 15 minutes (default) of inactivity or when the user closes the browser or logs out. This default can be changed in the Global Configuration options.

Many will appreciate this enhancement.

SEF URL's

Post by AmyStephen » Fri Jun 01, 2007 3:02 am

Joomla! v 1.5 has beautiful - permanent, readable, hierarchical, brief and clean - SEF URLs.

To check it out:
  • Select the Site - Configuration menu option (see attachment);
  • Select "Yes" to the Search Engine Friendly URLs option in the upper right corner;
  • Press Save.
The alias name from an article, section or category are used to help build the URL. (Come back with more detail on this.)

This one is a biggie!  8)

Extension Manager - Unified Installer

Post by AmyStephen » Mon Jun 04, 2007 8:21 pm

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, there is a separate installer for site templates, administrative templates, languages, components, modules and mambots (now called plugins). (see attached image #1).

In Joomla! v 1.5, there is one interface for installing all extensions, whether it is a component, module, plugin, language or template; thus, simplifying the interface significantly. (see attached image #2).

In addition, extensions can be installed from the package, like is done with v 1.0.x, or additionally from the install directory on the web server or from a URL.

Extension Manager - Ability to Disable Components

Post by AmyStephen » Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:18 pm

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, there is no way to disable components.

In Joomla! v 1.5, unused components can be disabled for enhanced application security. (see attached image #1)

Image Manager

Post by AmyStephen » Mon Jun 04, 2007 11:02 pm

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, there was a rather complicated way of inserting images in the content item (now article) unless you installed a third-party editor.

In Joomla! v 1.5, the Image Manager makes it easy to work with images.

When you are editing an article:
  • Position your cursor in the article text where you want to insert the image. Press the Image button beneath the editor window. (see attached image #1)
  • Select the directory where you want to store your image by using the listbox at top or by clicking on the folders. (see attached image #2)
  • Click the Browse button at the bottom of the Image Manger. Locate and click the name of the image you want to upload to your website. Click the Open button and then the upload button on the Image Manager screen.(see attached image #3)
  • Click the image you want to insert into your article. Fill in the information on the form. Press the Insert button.
It is a very nice improvement that makes working with images in your articles easy.

Hi Amy,

One of the changes I have already introduced to the new Help Screen layout for 1.5 is a section on changes between the versions this will be of significant use to that process. :D

Thanks very much

Andy

I am so pleased to be able to help in some way.

After we get the changes documented "basically", I will see what kinds of pictuers and text, etc., you want. I would also like to make a little PDF that we can share with those already familiar with v 1.0.x who want something to clue them in on what is new. So, we can talk about that later, too.

Andy - thanks for all YOU do and thanks for your encouragement of this little contribution, too!

HI Amy,

Within the Help Screens I am considering keeping the detail included relatively straight forward but I certainly believe creating a separate document that we could perhaps maintain on the Help Site (and PDF) to explain the details in more detail would be beneficial to the community.

I am shortly releasing a revision of the Editorial Style Guide which will (hopefully  ;))provide useful hints and tips on putting these docs together, plus new guides on Visual Style and the Documentation Process for the Workshop site where development work of this nature could be included, I will PM you separately with some extra contact details.

Regards

Andy

Exactly my idea, Andy. A quick help at the point of interest with a link to a more detailed piece of documentation with in turn its own references to other parts in the documentation.
That way you get a split between "expert" and "novice" help. Wow this concept goes back to the good old days of AI and Knowlegde Bases. I am surprising myself  :D; may be this thread brings the good things back to the top of my  IT conscience.
Note: Sending me private messages for personal support, without this been requested, would lead to ignoring any of your posts in future!

In Joomla! v 1.0.x, the {mos_ ......} prefix is used to load up code. E.g. {mosloadmodule xxxx},  etc.

In Joomla! v 1.5, just without the "mos". E.g. {loadmodule xxxx}, etc.

In 1.0 -  Trash Manager appeared on the default Control Panel, and in the Site Menu. It managed both trash and content trash.

In 1.5 - The Trash Manager does not appear in the default Control Panel. There is now "Menu Trash" under Menus, and "Article Trash" under Content.

No need to put a position in j!1.5.x just create a module then call in in content as {loadmodule themodulename}, previously in J!1.0.x you need to add position then put the module in that position then call it in content as {loadmoduleposition themodule) if not mistaken..
