Having the ability to easily link a menu item to a particular article is great... is there any way to extend that behaviour to creating links within articles?

I occasionally put links to an article or two within other articles, and it would be really nice to be able to do that by selecting from a list of published articles rather than having to find the proper url each time. Manually finding the url has caused problems in the past when I've used a url that is based on a menu link and then the menus are changed later -- the link is then broken... I know I could be more diligent and make sure I've got a non-menu-dependent url, but that can take several extra steps. (Yeah, I am that lazy!)

Anyway, I just thought since the functionality exists in creating menu links, maybe it could be extended to the content editor without a huge effort.

It's not currently there but that would be a great feature. :)

This reminded me of Wiki... One may create content plugin, that will automatically convert Article tiltle (or its alias...) to the link to that Article. So you will have to remember article titles or cut and paste them...

Apparently the open source editor "JCE" can handle exactly that, but I do not speak from personal experience. Keep your eye out here:  http://www.cellardoor.za.net/  for when they release a Joomla 1.5 beta version. From searching their forum, it sounded like they were working on a 1.5 version, with no committal to release date.

Hmmm... perhaps I was using JCE a while back on another site I developed -- I thought I'd experienced this functionality before, but couldn't track down where (so assumed it was just from the menu system).

I'll be watching their site for an announcement... thanks Murdock_SE!!  ;D

The Wiki approach would also be good - although I'd have to be careful how I title my articles so I don't get links where I don't want them just because I use the same words.  :-\

Also, I don't know if you are working with Joomla 1.5 set to "legacy 1.0" mode or not, but I'm in the middle of attempting to install JCE on a 1.5 system set with Joomla Legacy 1.0 on. I will report back with the steps needed to get JCE to work on 1.5 ( if I can figure it out!) so far, I'm getting some error messages when attempting to bring up the editor.

So far I've managed to avoid Legacy mode on the 1.5 sites I'm working on... but I'd still be interested to know about your success, as it might be worth turning Legacy mode on if I find I'm going to need this functionality a lot prior to a native 1.5 version of JCE being ready.

So far I have not been successful in installing the JCE mambot or admin component. It says it installed the mambot correctly, but it errors out when I try and use it as my default editor. Also, the admin component, I had to remove submenu items in the jce.xml to get it to 'say' it installed correctly, but yet again, it does not work. So, I recommend you wait for a 1.5 version, whenever they get around to making one.

Regards

@Murdock_SE - thanks for checking that out. Too bad it didn't work... hopefully the 1.5 native version of JCE won't be too far off.

It's a hack (and possibly doesn't work well with SEO?) but this post does give a solution for TinyMCE:
