Thanks koguja for updating the patch. I'm going to take a look at the code and see if I can pick up where orware left off. I make no guarantees but I'll post if I make any headway on fixing the problem with the front-end display.

Subcategories are a no-brainer for organizing information. For some odd reason, the developers of Joomla seem to have passed it by.

I just read a post from 2005 requesting subcategories. Almost four years later, there are still no subcategories native to Joomla. Four years!!!

Joomla is impressive. But it is missing some very elementary things, such as subcategories, that make one scratch his head and wonder: what the *&^% were the developers thinking?! Until the basics are incorporated into Joomla, it will always less than first-rate.

How about this: every category with a parent has the ID of the parent category. Almost every forum works that way to organize sub boards. Boards are just information, like categories.

Sorry if I seem testy. It's just that I use open source stuff because it is much more efficient than writing a CMS (or forum, or blog platform) from scratch. The problem is that every open source script out there has shortcomings that are so glaringly obvious that you wonder how the developers missed them. And they take years to be added to the core, if ever.

I still cannot believe there are no subcategories in Joomla. It's mind-boggling to me that any developer wouldn't consider that to be an important feature.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Yes Orware have disappear and no signs of core devs attention about this core feature.

I would be great if Orware or someone else worked with core dev to implement it working with Artcat too http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/5204/details

Then 1+1=3 for Joomla 1.6 with new ACL !!

You are mistaken my dear.

When Joomla 1.0 became 1.5

Then how would 1.5 become 1.6

It will be 2.0

The next WEB REVOLUTION

lol They're releasing 1.6 (check the New Year's post in the blogs) and then once that's been released they will release 2.0. It doesn't make much sense but thats how they're doing the numbering.

UPDATE ON MY PROGRESS:

Ok so as I stated above I'm working on the front-end view of subcategories. I've modified it slightly to get the front-end to display a list in the proper format on the front end whenyou click on a menu link to the section list layout (hope that makes sense). I'll let everyone know when I get further.

It does make sense to name it 1.0. The difference between 1.0 and 1.5 are really big. The changes between 1.5 and 1.6 will be smaller. 2.0 will be a totally new start. There might even be a 1.7 before 2.0, who knows.

Hi guys!

I'm joining this conversation to find out how advanced this project is and to offer to help.
I downloaded the subcategories_patches; My cms is a 158 upgraded to 159 joomla and it looks pretty good!

The breadcrumbs show me the second subcategories as in it's main category though. If no one is looking at that I could have a look under the hood and see what is the problem.

Sub-categories are very important, most websites have more than two levels, this will be useful for mostly everybody, great work!!

Is there any solution to have subcategories in Joomla 1.5.9?

Did you patch the files or try to upload them by Joomla installer?

Well this was the problem I was mentioned before and this "is the problem" 8) If this could be solved everything seems to work very nice...should be core of Joomla in my opinion with new ACL system.. :D

thanks for your answer..i found a way to autoselect category when submit, but work only if SEF is disabled (at least for me):

in components/com_content/helper/icon.php

after

$url = 'index.php?task=new&ret='.base64_encode($ret).'&id=0&sectionid='.$article->sectionid;

add

$url = $url.'&catid='.$article->id;

Thanks to everyone devoted to subcategories issue, i'm using the patch and it's great!
but the only thing i miss is ability to show all subcategories material in parent category blog view.
I use menu tree structure SECTION - CATEGORY - SUBCATEGORY
In SECTION i have all my articles listed in subcategories but in CATEGORY i have nothing listed!
How can i fix this?

How is it all coming along? Is the latest version:
"subcategories_patches-0.5_J1.5.9.zip"

Posted by koguja on Jan 15th 2009?

Are there any functional errors / problems with the development. So far it is looking good on my test site. Just what the doctor ordered.

Joomla! 1.5.9 is what I am running, but that is a good point to make.

One tweak that is required is the menu option.

Section x
  • - Category 1 (Articles / Category List)
    • - Sub Cat 1a (Articles / Sub Category List)
      - Sub Cat 1b (Articles / Sub Category List)
      - Sub Cat 1c (Articles / Sub Category List)
    - Category 2 (Articles / Category List)
    • - Sub Cat 2a (Articles / Sub Category List)
      - Sub Cat 2b (Articles / Sub Category List)
When the user clicks on Section x, they get a category list, all fine. I figured out that they admin has to list all the categories and sub categories in one numbered list i.e. the above example would have an order of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and NOT (1 - 1,2,3) (2 - 1,2)

Anyway, back to my menu tweak request....
If the user then clicks on Section x, they get category list.

If the user clicks on Category 1, they get all the articles in category 1, which there MAY be none as there will either be articles and sub categories or sub categories only. i.e. there is no option to set that menu option to "SUB categorIES List" as in list all the sub categories in the category.

Any plans to do this?

Am I right that this patch doesn't change any files in Front-end? Only back-end is implemented?

Nevertheless, the concept itself lacks functionality, as some of you mentioned before (listing of articles, belonging to subcategories).

That's why I'm building a real TAG'ing component (call it taxonomy, whatever). Then it would be possible to assign an article to many categories (TAG = category in this way), list all subcategories articles, and also, the breadcrumbs would be perfect (Tag > subcategory > sub sub category > ... > article)

Re: Joomla Subcategories Project Update

Hello everyone! Long time no talk :-).

I've recently completed work on my ArtCats 2.0 module (added support for the subcategories patches into it), which has allowed me to come back and finally finish up the subcategories patches.

Tonight I finished completing the support within com_categories in the admin area...no long will you have the problem of no categories showing when you create a new category!

A dynamic list has been integrated so now you can change the section when creating a new category and the list of parent categories to choose from will be updated at the same time! Much more convenient :-).

I've gone through the latest 1.5.9 update and double-checked all of the files and tested it on my local PC so you shouldn't have any problems with it.

More updates are planned (plus the official website for the downloads, demo, etc.) and they will be coming more often now.

Some additional things in the works are:
Frontend subcategories support
Integration with jxtended's Content Manager Component (Frontend ACL Content Editing)
Integration with Egxact's Versioning Component for Content
Breadcrumbs/SEF Router Changes
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
