i would like my site to have a static main page with info about the site without all the modules except a login module, and then go to a different page with a different layout that displays the modules and content. How can i do this.

PHASE I:

1. make 2 templates for the home/index page and the content pages you wanted. lets call it template 1 and template 2, as template 1 for the home page and template 2 as for the other inside pages.

PHASE II:

1. static main page -> create a content item which is from the "static content"
2. make a menu item for that "static content"
3. on the menu manager make that menu item to be at the top of the heirarchy, i.e.: the default home menu item wil eiher be unpublished and the menu item you just made make it at the first menu item in replace of the default home menu.
4. assign temaplte #1 to that menu item link you just made.  you can do this in the site admin, -> templates -> choose template 1 in the radio button then click assign in the uppper right portion -> click on the menu item of home or the static page that you just made.

PHASE III:

1. while in the template area of the admin, make your template 2 as "default".

===================

PHASE IV:

1. go tinker and happy tinkering!
2. if this answers your question, go grab a beer and enjoy Joomla! :)
3. pass it forward :)
