Manually Delete Cache Folder?

Is it ok to go in and manually delete the cache? I have cleaned all caches via Joomla but all the files seem to remain in my /cache folder. In fact the folder is so large that I cant even navigate to it via FTP, it always times out.

I cant add content to my site when the cache is turned on. I get this error:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/downsout/public_html/includes/Cache/Lite.php on line 376

So I have to turn cache off, then add the content and then turn the cache back on. (Oddly, my site actually seems faster with cache turned off) I'm hoping that trimming my cache folder content will fix this. It looks like the only way I can do that is to delete my whole cache folder, then make a new one. Would this be ok?

One thing is good to know. When you are logged in the cache function is turned off that might slow down the site. Logg off and try again. Regarding the files not deleted I cannot help you.

I am sorry I just realized that I posted in Joomla 1.0...

I have the same problem with Joomla 1.5...

Yes, you can just delete and recreate the cache folder, it will not upset Joomla!, a best practice would be to turn off cache first, then make the site offline for the duration that it takes to delete the complete directory, recreate the directory, copy one of the index.html files from snother directory there , then go back to your site online and enable cache again.

Today I manually deleted the cache (it was about 5 GB... many times bigger than the actual site... my god)...
And then I tried to delete it again from the administration panel.... and it worked

So I suppose that if you live your cache to grow so big then there is a problem with the http... and this is why the deletion from the administrator panel doesn't work!

cheers! I had a ton of cache as well and it's still deleting via FTP as I post this.

Feel bad for the guy on top who had to wait couple years to get a reply though....

I found a plugin named Auto Purge Cache that automatically purges the expired cache... It is very helpful and if you put a good purge frequency, you will never have a problem again...! I should notice that you have not to set a cron job!!!

To remove cache

Select Tools → Clean Cache from the drop-down menu on the Back-end of your Joomla! installation.
