It depends who is the owner of this folder (Apache, root, you...). May be you can copy this folder on you local machine through FTP then delete it on your server, then copy it form local to server.

I found this topic while searching for the answer to this problem. I've been having a lot of permission issues with a site template and several components. It got to the point that everytime I wanted to make a change, I'd have to uninstall the template/component, make the changes locally, then rezip and install again (painful!)

Anyway I've just installed eXtplorer and overwriting images works with this component, so I suggest that as a way to go.

I found that the only time is if I upload a template through the install/uninstall method that I experience the problems of not being able to change permissions, however if I simply upload the unzipped template folder to the templates directory the template was picked up fine in the template manager, and no problems with permissions etc...

I agree with heartodark, it's the same problem. Can't delete, can't chmod, can't change permissions, can't do a thing with the files and folders, especially with the templates. When I use cpanel to delete, they all come back again (how in the world is that possible???) And, getting the exact same error message. It's definitely all related to the same problem. I'm sorry that heartodark got jumped on for this.

Thank you to Dreamwater for an appropriate answer.

So this means I'll have to go Un-install all the templates I just uploaded, so I can do some customizing. From now on I'll load them to the server using my own FTP program, rather than Joomla's internal upload system. I've never seen anything like this and I don't like it.

I wonder why Joomla locks up the templates like that? To prevent hacking?

What you have to do is install the EXTPLORER program, it's in the Joomla extensions directory. It's the only thing I've found that seems to conquer the permissions issues. Apparently the Joomla developers wrote it as a solution for this problem?

You can use EXTPLORER to transfer files, and I do that if it's only one file. But if you have to work with a whole lot of files then it's easier to chmod the entire folder and subfolders and files to 777 (with EXTPLORER), so you can work with the files more easily because EXTPLORER is a bit tedious.

Once the permissions are 777, then you should be able to change the chmods to something else, with your regular FTP program, when you're finished customizing.

Joomla has some definite quirks and this is one of the biggest quirks, in my opinion. I don't know why they can't fix it so the permissions aren't locked up after programs are installed. I have other scripts that do automatic installations, and this problem happened to one folder in particular that I was unable to change or delete. The developers told me they knew about the problem and they fixed it in the next release, which was a matter of days.

At the time, I had to ask my server manager to delete the folder because I couldn't. So I think it was THIS same problem, which the developers corrected when they realized it had happened. Why can't Joomla do that?

ok a new question about this problem: I have installed the EXTPLORER as suggested..
However, it will not allow me to change the CMOD permissions..
The button is greyed out. When I right click to get options, it is also greyed out..
Am I doing something wrong?

If you switch to FTP mode you can probably do it. You can work in FILE mode or FTP mode, and if I switch modes I can usually do what I want. Eventually.

Go to Global Configuration, Server and change file and Folder permission to 777 and select the tab of APPLY TO EXISTING FILES & APPLY TO EXISTING FOLDERS.

Now clear the cache and try again, you should be able to upload or modify files and folders.

I don't think that's recommended. Change ALL the Joomla files to permissions 777? No, that's a very insecure setting. Anybody can come along and hack the site very easily!

We should only change permissions on the few files and folders that we need to work with. And after we're finished customizing, we should change the permissions back to 755 at the very least. Only use 777 for a temporary setting, unless a program instructs you to leave certain folders writable.

Thats right, There is a huge security risk. But there is no other way you can edit protected files/folders. And thanks for reminding to change everything to 755

Well, yes there IS another way. Use Extplorer instead and then you can change the permissions on only the files/folders that need to be customized.

Sounds like you need Extplorer for yourself, too. It's available (free) in the extensions directory.

The Extplorer program was developed for Joomla users because of the permissions problems.

Worked for me, if you can't change permissions with eXtplorer, just try to upload an image or doc.
IT WORKS!!

Thanks contributors, was trying for 2 days.

Hi !
I was getting following error while trying to uploading a file, logo.png through the FTP.

Command: CWD /httpdocs/templates/ja_nex/images
Command: 250 CWD command successful
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Type set to I
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (184,168,69,86,177,113).
Command: STOR logo.png
Response: 550 logo.png: Permission denied
Error: Critical file transfer error

Tried everythings except contacting our server host provider I didn't get any result.
It was resolved by the Server host provider. According to them, that directory was owned by apache.
They updated the ownership immediately.
In this way I became successful in uploading the files.
