What have I been doing for the last four months with Joomla?

I Have found that I really don't understand how to structure the site properly, even layout, I am fighting with the menu
I tried to link static content and was unable to find the link address, not even surewhen to use static or not.
I found that my home component link item1 is now something like #item94 and with seo on the pictures are not working but I think that is another story. I have read the beginners post some time ago, still not clear.

Can some kind soul pleas advise with the necessary post links.

You might also want to take a trip over to Joomla Tutorials http://www.joomlatutorials.com/joomla_tutorials/ they have some excellent visual tutorials on how to do most things with Joomla!.
