administrator template problem

i've installed a new administrator template but i had a major screw up. joomla seems not loading the css of this template and the layout is messed up. the problem is that i cant get to roll back to the previous template since the menus are not showing and since even though i select the default template and click the button defautl, it doesn't work. what file do i have to edit to switch back to the previous set up?
