Trying to update 1.0 site to 2.5

Hi all -
So...okay, I'm a bit behind the game in trying to update my 1.0 site to the new 2.5. I am having trouble figuring out how to do it (if it's even possible). Can anyone advise if:
1. I should destroy my current 1.0 site and re-build in 2.5 (if so...can you please also share how I can build a site offline and then take it live?)
2. I should seek a migrator for this?
3. If I should work with a pro (and if so...can you recommend anyone?)
