Never updated for 4 years!! HELP PLZ....

Post by cheekyman » Mon Nov 05, 2012 6:21 am

;)

Hi.....

We have a bit of a dilema with a Joomla site!

My girlfriend has been working on this Joomla site for 4 years and has never been told to update!
She has integrated gallery2 into this thing too and never updated.

With me being a web designer etc... have now taken on this project and would like to:

A) Update to the latest versions of Joomla and Gallery3

B) Migrate the whole lot, inc the database to a new server

If someone would be so kind as to view the website we are talking about it's:

http://www.walkingmum.com

Any advice would be really, really appreciated as I know nothing about "JOOMLA"

Many Thanks Guy's

You have your work cut out for you. I recommend upgrading to Joomla 2.5 because there are very few extensions built for 3.0.
- backup site! In fact, I recommend creating a backup of current site, install that somewhere else, do your migration on the test site and when ready copy back over to live site. Best way to avoid screwing up your live site, especially if you are not familiar with upgrading joomla.
- upgrade from 1.0 to 1.5 using jupgrade; check with extension developers to see if they have a way to migrate data to new version. some do, most don't.
- upgrade from 1.5 to 2.5 using jupgrade
- get a new template or modify one of the default templates. Your existing template will be so outdated that it's not worth upgrading the template; eg, html, css, and joomla code all outdated.
See this article for overview of the process. It has links to detailed upgrade docs.
