Help, I think someone is ripping our company off!

Post by harpy0 » Wed Aug 05, 2009 5:05 pm

Our company has been running a site for 2 or more years under Joomla 1.0, but it was basically built and maintained by a third party who actually is also hosting our site. NOTE: We do not have access to our root directory, FTP or anything. We only have administrator panel access to Joomla itself.

One day, we could no longer change our prices or add new product prices rendering our Virtuemart basically useless. So we asked the gentlemen who was managing our site. He replied,

"It was a code level fix that I found in the forums. The upgrade y'all did to 13a broke one file that had to be fixed.
I'll send an invoice separately through paypal.
Thanks
xxxxxx"

The invoice was for $200 dollars. My question is, could that upgrade have been made without FTP or root access of any sort?

Afterwards, our administrator password was mysteriously changed, but no one in our company did it. We couldn't access our site to make changes.

You can upgrade components/plugins and modules and other areas of the site through the administrator backend. You don't need FTP access to do it.
I don't know if there's a log of actions like install/uninstall kept with dates/IP address etc.
So yes,it is possible to do what your contractor claims :|

Thank you for your quick reply, but after reading the following posts, I'm confused. They are saying to do this specific upgrade I would need to overwrite files.

http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?P ... t=next#new

Is that not correct?

Not sure about the link you posted, the forum posts there didn't seem to contain any information relating to your question.

The back end installation process can overwrite files, if there were mods that REQUIRED FTP access that you don't possess, then your position should be clear.

Maybe you should request the server HTTP and FTP logs for the relevant time period to try and understand what happened.

Thank you for all your help, really.

Can anyone tell me if the Joomla 13a upgrade, specifically, could have been done within Joomla?

And if you know, how is that done?

Many thanks.

No, you need to modify files. FTP access is required.

Steps - Overwrite files with upgrade package and run upgrade sql on DB.
