Same story, I got the nice task to upgrade a 'brandnew' joomla 1.0.11 installation to Joomla 2.5. We're a bit late, but this was an overtake of an old NGO project....still I managed to unlock the site. Now we need to upgrade to 1.5 then 2.5...

you can use mtwmigrator, this is a 1.5 component that pulls the 1.0 database.
