Have looked and cannot find anyone with a similar issue so am starting this new thread, but please feel free to just point me to a solution if i missed it.

We have awstats running on our site
But the new .htaccess and SEF 404 processing in joomla 1.0.7 wont let me view it
awstats is in the /awstats folder and then it has its own .htaccess file that makes the DirectoryIndex awstats.pl

Using the default .htaccess provided with 1.0.7 does not allow awstats to be accessed, it instead displays the new joomla sef 404 error page

I have tried making some changes in the .htaccess myself to get this to work but nothing i change seems to work
I have tried adding an Option -Indexes so that the .htaccess from the awstats folder could be used
I have tried adding some new ReWriteCond rules to see if i could get it to not go to index.php if the folder was awstats
what i tried here was
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/awstats/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/awstats/awstats\.pl

but nothing i do will allow awstats to be visible (unless i turn SEF which i dont want to do)
does anyone have any ideas?

thanx i think that helped a bit
another part of the problem was that for some reason it didnt like the permissions on the awstats folder
once i REMOVED the write permission on groups and others it now works fine
