Suggest you try this proposed solution:

I have tried the proposed solution and it works but only for firefox. I have the same problem for IE. I did some testing and find out that if i'm going to register as a new user, I won't get the error even in IE. Right now i'm just advising users to use firefox.

Maybe related: http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,49495.msg267669.html#msg267669
But in that case it's an apache server.

The message I'm getting in IE is:

Quote:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I am having the same problem on Apache with the login. The root of my site is set to mysite.com.  When I attempt to login at http://www.mysite.com, it returns to http://www.mysite.com and not logged in.  As the previous poster said, if I go to http://mysite.com it shows logged in.  That is with the posted solution on Apache using FireFox 1.5.0.1.  ???

If I'm using the latest IE6, it doesn't set the session for even the http://mysite.com.

In both cases, going directly to http://mysite.com and logging in works fine.

Thanks for the information and attempts, always good to at least know you're not alone! heh

Edit:  Actually... What worked best for me was changing the live_site line in configuration.php to include the "www" in it. It logs in and returns to the main page without an error.  The address url is still fubar but at least no glaring errors messages for users.  I'm using cPanel, so Fantastico, at least at my host, sets default to not include the www.

Just wanted to chip in and say that when I log in to anyone of 3 joomla sites I maintain it logs me in but takes me to a page cannot be found error because the address bar states http://www.domain.com/http://www.domain.com when I click the login button. It duplicates the domain as I press LOGIN for whatever reason giving me this error.

It seems to log me in, because when I click the back button it shows that my username is online, but I don't see the administrator menu. If I delete the duplicate URL in the address bar after loggin in then press enter, the site loads and I can see the administrator menu.

Two of my sites run Apache on Linux with PHP 4.3 the other site I am not sure. This started happening with 1.0.8

Have you implemented the proposed solution:
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,46684.0.html

And if necessary also this one:
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,46681.0.html

Interestingly I upgraded 2 Apache sites to 1.0.8 both had the problem with "Hi, 0" instead of "Hi, -user-"

I implemented the solution http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,46684.0.html on 1 and it worked. On the other site I started to be redirected to mysite.co.uk/mysite.co.uk on login which would not be found.

I have now put mod_login.php back to 1.0.7 version on that server.

They are on different servers One difference that could possibly influence it is that the one that did not work had register_globals set.

At the moment I am happy with this solution. I will have to check things a bit better in future, but I thought this reply might help people find a correct solution.

I am finding the opposite of this issue.  When I log into the site from http://www.site.com I am logged in but the site does not bring up the user menu and is still displaying the login module. But if I start all over again at http://site.com I am logged in perfectly.

During the first login attempt (@ http://www.site.com) if I went to a link after not seeming to be logged in, it would reveal that I was actually logged in.

Maybe this issue is something that we will have to wait for the next version for, but I don't know enough about this to be of much help.

well it depend how did you configure your site in the configuration file
if you have configured the site as http://site.com rather than http://www.site.com
you will got the opposite issue

Hello!

I've downloaded the patch in your proposed solution here http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,46684.0.html

It did fix the URL redirection problem & the user name shows properly, only this doesn't work on FireFox 1.5.0.1 nor Mozilla 1.7 (both from a Linux machine).

When I try to login, in FireFox or Mozilla, it just re-displays the main page.I've tried to access with both "www" and without "www" in the URL.
The funny thing is that when I check the logged-in users, I find that user logged-in!

Cookies are enabled. JavaScript is enabled.

Edit :: I've a previous user's comment and it seemes that only when I click on a link, the user menu shows. If the redirect script took me to the frontPage using a link, I think that would solve the problem. (/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/)
The above test worked on FireFox, Mozilla & Konqueror.

Server config :: FreeBSD (@5.4-STABLE kernel), Apache 1.3.34 (Unix), PHP 4.4.1, MySQL 4.0.26

I had modified \modules\mod_login.php.

At line 20 change  !==  in !=

at line 31 change $return = $request_uri;  in  $return = $url;

and it works.

Thanks guizzo, worked a treat!

I am also having this (login does not work, redirects back to home page with no login or error message) problem on a server with register_globals set. Maybe the developers can take a look. I am going to try an earlier version of joomla to see if the problem is still reproduced.

Thanks stingrey

That worked a treat..... imagine how long it would take to figure something like that out without forums like this and the helpful people on them...

Cheers,

Dave

The Community Builder login module seems to suffer from the same problem in IIS. I don't really understand the logic behind the first "if" statement in the mod_cblogin.php. But, if you comment out the first condition of the "if" statement on line 20 and just make the result the same as the else, it works. You can login without the odd repeating URL. I know this could very well cause some other sort of mayhem within the system, but I needed a fix for this now while I figure out a better solution.

Once again, here's what I changed my code to in mod_cblogin.php to make the community builder login work without the repeating URL problem.
Code:
if (!(strncmp($request_uri, "http:", 5)==0) && !(strncmp($request_uri, "https:", 6)==0)) {
//$return = "http".((isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && ( !empty( $_SERVER['HTTPS'] ) ) && ($_SERVER['HTTPS'] != 'off') )?"s":"")."://".mosGetParam( $_SERVER, 'HTTP_HOST', null ).((strpos($request_uri, '/') !== 0) ? "/":"").$request_uri;
$return = $request_uri;
} else {
   $return = $request_uri;
}

If anyone out there has a better solution. Please Let me know.
Also, does anyone know what happened to joomapolis.com? I haven't been able to access it for quite some time now?
