Well, if you really are using the structure as a hierarchy those pages are very important in terms of design since they are the key entry points for major sub areas of a site. So it would just be helpful for making a structure that is useful and attractive to be able to do move complex things on those pages. But I guess there are probably other work arounds? Like if I want to put a menu right there? Or a random image? Latest news? It's just that right now you have to over ride the hierarchy if you want to use these features and then you lose the advantages of the hierarchy structure in terms of letting people drill down.Maybe using plugins isn't the answer though. I don't know enough about the issues of caching etc.
But you really have to admit that, just as one example, the on the fly listings of categories and content items are really problematic both in function (can't control templating for individual items; can't list empty categories) and appearance. You really want to make a menu to have it look good and have full functionality. And you don't always want that menu over on the side. So that's why I want to be able to put a module into the description.
