Hi All,
I am very new to Joomla and just learning which I hope makes my input relevant to what should be included in documentation.

I almost always look for 3 main areas when I install and start using any new program:

1. How do I install, upgrade and update. The installation seems to be covered, but in the update area I do not see any clear explaination of the the intended result of uploading new files. Am I overwriting existing files or replacing the entire file set? Are there any files I have to be careful about overwritng?

2. How do I "make it my own"? That is - once installed I want to immediately start customizing the installation for my purpose. I think that this section should include specific instructions on a) controlling the overall look and feel, b) inserting your own names and logos and c) where do I put everything.

A little more on 2.c. I get the idea that the presentation and content are separated and the content is supposed to be maintained in the database. But it appears that is perhaps not entirely true. Many sites (including mine) have several different types of files either for viewing or download that might not be appropriate for the database. Those are images and pictures that are part of articles, PDF versions of articles, large documents in any form but mainly PDF, downloadable files or documents. I have many binary files that are intended for a customer's download (programs, flash memory images, drivers, etc.). So, are there other directories and files that I have to create or handle separately?

3. How do I protect my work?  It not only helps me, but gives me confidence in the progam if I see fairly clear documentation on backups and recovery from disasters.

So far I am really impressed with the capabilities and usefulness of Joomla. I want to thank you all for giving me a clear route to update my old Frontpage web site which is getting tired and difficult to maintain.
